Not an African water hole, but ...

The coyotes though ... they look more Red Wolf to me. I had several biologists from around the country look at some video of the wolves and their guess is that they're a mix of red wolf, coyote, and maybe even dog.

I've seen lots of coyotes, and this family looks different. There are nine of them and they all look slightly different from each other. One of the adults, and 2 of the pups look very similar to a coyote, but the rest are different.

I completely agree with you! I actually kind of wondered about that myself when I was watching.
I have seen lots of coyotes myself (in inner city Denver, no less) and your critters did look different.
I have heard of coyotes and red wolves mixing it up a bit.
A month ago, one of the red wolf pups, a yearling, left the Wildlife Refuge here; swam to the mainland from St Vincent's Island. The yearlings always try to leave around 18 months of age, and the wildlife people usually move them before that--but he was precocious. He had a radio collar on and they did find him before he got far. He definitely would have eventually found a coyote or dog girlfriend . ;-)

St. Vincent was one of the places I called since it would be pretty easy for one of their wolves to get off the island and wander over here. They assured me that they haven't lost any. They did have one go missing, but found it's collar and figured it had been poached.

I was told that all the pure red wolves in the wild have radio collars, and they're all accounted for.

But it was fun, all the biologists were very intrigued by my video footage and kept passing it around for others to see.

I was hoping the state would come in and stop the development that's going to take away 117 acres of their home, leaving them with just the 37 ace preserve behind my house. I was told that only the wolves with radio collars are protected.
