CAIRO - Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden has called for the world to boycott American goods and the U.S. dollar, blaming the United States and other industrialized countries for global warming, according to a new audiotape released Friday.

In the tape, broadcast in part on Al-Jazeera television, bin Laden warned of the dangers of climate change and said that the way to stop it is to bring "the wheels of the American economy" to a halt.

He blamed Western industrialized nations for hunger, desertification and floods across the globe, and called for "drastic solutions" to global warming, and "not solutions that partially reduce the effect of climate change."

Reason #462 to rethink our country's over-consumption of the world's resources. :bang:

Sweet. Bin Laden is using some Jedi mind tricks on us now. Next he is going to declare that freedom of speech/religion, equal rights for women and free elections, etc etc are good so that scared Americans abandon these terrorist principles. Hahaha! There is so much material here for a good onion story or snl skit. :)

I agree. Since when did he become green? And, concerned with global hunger?

No, he's sort of got a legitimate economic/environmental rallying point with this one. We use way more than our fair share of the world's resources and are one of the worst polluters.

We are 4% of the world's population, yet use 25% of the world's oil, operate 1/3 of the world's vehicles, and each US citizen consumes an average of 25 tons of raw material in a year.

China only recently edged us out as the #1 carbon dioxide producer (Russia is #3 and we would both still be #1 and #2 even if we halved our emissions). If you break it down per capita we're #2 and they're #44.
