Petition To Protect Soldier Monuments

New posts
I mean you no disrespect Kurt...

It is happening directly in Walton County. If legislation is passed, it will have a statewide impact.

And just so we don't get this twisted, when I private messaged you about why this thread was moved, what you said to me was and I'll quote you; "It's not specifically about SoWal". So, if that's the case, the confederate flag issue isn't specifically about SoWal because the flag isn't flown at the Courthouse Annex in SoWal and there is no monument there either. Also, most of the people who signed the petition to remove that flag were NOT from Walton County and did not have a dog in the fight.
Good points Misty. Whatever the reasons were we may never know but you and I know that this whole discussion involves Monuments to the Confederate Soldiers which includes the Confederate Flag symbolizing those Soldiers as well as Southern Heritage. This has been stated over and over by many different posts. The only conclusion is that the moderators decided that those people who support the Confederate Flag as a memorial to the fallen Soldiers are just not telling the truth and that they must really be racists and worse (read some of the post from Poppy, Cuff, Leader of the Banned). What is so ironic (again, I am putting it mildly) is that there are almost NO African Americans living in Sowal. Something tells me this may be my final post so good luck to all of us in our endeavors.

In all fairness mputnal, the United States has a very racist history but it is OUR history.

Americans tend to be selective regarding which aspects of OUR collective past we choose to acknowledge. We celebrate George Washington as the first US president, while ignoring the fact he was a salve owner. Thomas Jefferson was also a slave owner and even had children with one of them. Will removing monuments of George Washington or Jefferson absolve us of our history? No, but they should serve to remind us of our past so that OUR history does not continue to repeat itself. By keeping them we keep the historical significance of those monuments and memorials honest.

On this issue, while I have the deepest respect for Kurt, Misty is right. There are memorials and monuments to fallen soldiers all over Walton County and Florida. I believe there is even a memorial to soldiers very close to me at Gulf Cemetary. It is your site, Kurt, and we all appreciate it and the usage thereof. However, I think your interpretation of this issue is wrong in this case.

I disagree.

Just looking at the local politics forum and comparing it to the lounge it's pretty easy to see why the topics are in 2 different forums.

The gun control thread in the lounge is an issue that affects every American - including Walton Countonians. Yet I agree it should be in the lounge and not the local politics forum. I see the logic. It seems a couple of babies got their wittle feelings hurt when it got moved to the appropriate place. And good point that it should have been posted in the flag thread to begin with.

Now that I look at it again, the whole bill proposal is an immature and sarcastic response by confederate flag backers who are trying to make a point at our expense - tying up our lawmakers with BS issues when they have real work to do. I've seen Andy and others complain about people who do that with Walton County government, wasting our time and tax dollars.

mputnal I think you just called the operators of this site racist? If so you should be banned. :banned:

QFT

shame!

I disagree.

You are free to do that.

Umm, my feelings are not hurt. I accepted what Kurt did but not for the reason he stated in this thread and would have appreciated it more had he not told me himself that the issue "was not specifically about SoWal". The generalization to "Walton County" is annoying.

Shoot the message, not the messenger! I did not start the petition and I don't back the flag. I do back the law. It's not against the law. And speaking of wasting time and tax dollars...do you need to be reminded of how many hours the BCC sat and listened to the "remove it" crowd over something that isn't against the law or how childish and immature they acted when they didn't get their way??? Spare me the self righteous indignation.

I don't think that is what he said at all. Kurt doesn't control who does or does not move to SoWal and most of us are intelligent enough to recognize that.

Yes Misty that is my point. It is "our" history and it is hypocritical to be "selective" in our history for whatever the reason. Racism is part of American History (including African Americans) yet there are some here who are running away from that fact so hard that they have trampled and desecrated a very important part of "our" history. Yet, they do not stop there. For example, Jensky has some other reason to try and "shame" others (myself in particular). Why, I have no idea but it is his right to say what he wants just as you had a right to post the Monument Petition under the Confederate Flag Petition thread. I believe it is important to get history right and not hide it or destroy it because it reminds us that we Americans have come a long way. I think those like Jensky and Mike Jones simply need to believe that they are on the right side of history. What is odd to me is that since none of us had anything to do with that history why make such hateful judgements of others? Either it is a pack mentality or some just feel superior to others...

Mike Jones, I believe Kurt is fully capable of banning whomever he feels is necessary to protect the integrity of this forum. Problem for him is how many of us to ban because we have all gotten carried away with insults. It needs to stop and I would not blame him for starting with me. However, until he does that I will go toe to toe with those who are, well lets just say confused.

I wonder if some even bothered to read the petition. It very clearly lists all the conflicts for the memorials. I am not so dense as to not understand this means all monuments and memorial to fallen soldiers will be protected. Yes, even those to Confederate soldiers. If that drives some of you crazy, you don't understand the meanings behind the tributes rendered to those who gave their all.

I doubt many of them read it Andy because many of them are just arrogant enough to believe that if they create this "great racial divide" that our history will morph itself into something it is not now or ever has been. We can never give this country back to the indigenous people it was stolen from, bring back slavery even though it was part of our history or replace the lives of those lost in ANY war....but we can REMEMBER and HONOR them.
