Petreaus: Burning Qurans = Lives at Risk

New posts
Sorry, but burning someone's holy religious text is extreme. It's on par with vandalizing a house of worship. I find neither act to be acceptable behavior - even if one is protesting.

If Muslims were burning Bibles and vandalizing churches it would be news too.

It's not extreme. The extremism is coming from the idiots in the middle east who get so worked up about stuff like this. If you've got a spare Koran or Bible you don't need, send it to me, I'll be happy to burn it for you.

i'm curious which one burns cleaner and longer myself.

I agree that burning someone's holy text is extreme and on par with vandalism, but if I burn my own personal copy, that's a whole other story. It's mine, I paid for it. That said in most cases, it's a rather pointless endeavor. It's also rude and insensitive. It bothers me that a Christian church would do this because they're obviously trying to promote Christian superiority over other religions. I can't say I'm on board with that. It galls me that they think they represent our country's values when they do something so inflammatory.

They (the Christian Church) ALL need to start paying taxes if they want to move any of their political agenda(s) forward....

You're just burning some paper. It has no significance. I find it sad to see people burn the American flag or an effigy of a president, but you don't see me protesting in the streets over it. Maybe that's because I recognize it really has no bearing on my life.

It's not just paper - because it has meaning and value ascribed to it.

I am sure you do not want me to come to your home, gather up all your valuables and burn them - even though those things are "just paper, cloth, metal etc."

The whole point of this thread is that these idiots burning holy texts DOES have bearing on your life - because their actions directly cost us money and make us less safe. This isn't some columnist's opinion, it is coming from the guy in charge of the war we are fighting.

Well, I find it disrespectful, distasteful and I wouldn't associate.

But, don't confuse what 'is' with what 'is someone's opinion.' Because there are going to be many opinions on this one.

How do you feel about host desecration? Is it just a piece of bread? Even today, some Catholics get Medieval about it.

[ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Host_desecration]Host desecration - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

HISTORY:

Host desecration, is a form of sacrilege in Christianity (Anglicanism, Eastern and Oriental Orthodoxy, Lutheranism, and Roman Catholicism) involving the mistreatment or malicious use of a consecrated host? the sacred bread used in the Mass. In Roman Catholicism, host desecration is a mortal sin, in that, unless it is forgiven and fully absolved, it condemns a person to Hell after death. Throughout history, a number of groups have been accused of desecrating the Eucharist, often with grave consequences due to the spiritual importance of the consecrated wafer.

MODERN TIMES:

In his July 8 blog entry, University of Minnesota Morris biology professor PZ Myers criticized the reaction to a local student's act of host desecration. Myers described the level of harassment leveled against the student and expressed his intent to desecrate the wafer, which Catholics consider a mortal sin.[8]

Myers expressed outrage that Fox News appeared to be inciting readers to cause further problems for the student, and ridiculed reports that armed guards would attend the next Mass. Myers suggested that if any of his readers could acquire some consecrated Eucharistic hosts for him, he would treat the wafers "with profound disrespect and heinous cracker abuse, all photographed and presented here on the web."[9]

A number of Catholics immediately reacted strongly. William A. Donohue of The Catholic League accused Myers of anti-catholic bigotry,[10] described his proposal as a threat to desecrate what Catholics hold to be the Body of Christ, and sent a letter asking the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota State Legislature to take action against Myers.[10][11].

According to Donohue, as the Pharyngula website was accessible via a link from the University of Minnesota website, it should be bound by the institution's code of conduct which requires faculty to be "respectful, fair and civil" when dealing with others.[11] Subsequently, Myers explained to the Star Tribune that while his post was "satire and protest", he had received death threats regarding the incident but was not taking them too seriously.[10]

We're not talking about your personal items scooter. It's not the same, it's a freedom of speech issue.

Somewhere in here there was a thread about whether or not the lunatics won. Clearly in some cases, they have.

This reminds me of a quote by Breathed on the demise of Bloom County:

"Bloom County" had five times the edge of the work I do now. In 1986 I had a cockroach scream, "Reagan sucks!" in print size that took up the entire cartoon box. Nobody blinked -- 1,000 newspapers, quiet as a mouse. Now I draw a woman wearing a Muslim scarf, and the frantic publisher of the Washington Post Co. is on the phone at 9 p.m. telling me -- I am not making this up -- to adjust my character's hair so she doesn't look too unkempt.

Fear doesn't so much rule the wood pulp news industry. More like pee-on-themselves existential terror.
