Petreaus: Burning Qurans = Lives at Risk

New posts
What I find interesting about this whole thing is the incredible lack of perspective of the media and world on things.

This (publicity craving) pastor wants to burn a book. A book. The whole world is talking about it, Muslims are outraged and are staging demonstrations and his life is threatened.

Last month a group of Doctors and aid workers were assassinated in Afghanistan and the reason given was that someone in the party had a bible in their possession. (Gunmen Kill Medical Aid Workers in Afghanistan)

This made the news for what? A couple of days?

The books to be burned are some cardboard and paper that can easily be replaced.

These people are dead. They aren't coming back. Their families and friends are devastated. Some of the folks they were helping will die as well for lack of treatment.

Where are the worldwide demonstrations? Where is the media?

It is amazing to me how easily we and the media are manipulated.

Why do we put up with crap like this?

Also, Preacher Man didn't acquiesce until a call from the Pentagon. I wonder how that call went?

Koa, can't you also bury a flag for proper disposal? Not talking about a funeral of a service person. I have a flag that is faded, tattered, torn and I have been asked to bury it properly. Until I figure this out, it's folded and in a safe place.

What I don't get is this - the whole koran burning thing was basically a protest over the mosque in nyc. To me, that seems like a pretty reasonable way to make a point. Yet for some reason the crazy guy burning some paper gets beaten up by the press, while the weird imam hell bent on building his building where nobody wants it gets the support of the President and ends up on on Larry King.

Both are expressing individual rights. But only one gets vilified by the media. It's a crazy country we live in.

They weren't exactly building it where "nobody wants it" - which is why the mayor of New York and some 9-11 groups were among the strong proponents of the project.

And as a reminder we make the President place his hand on "some paper" as he takes the oath for the highest office in our country.

Maybe I missed something, but if he was "not religious," how could he be a Muslim? As idlewind stated, the Koran reads that Muslims shall not tolerate half-@ss believers. (paraphrasing)
Thinking more about this preacher, on the surface, he does seem extreme, especially if you go by the New Testament teachings of Christ. However, if you take the Bible in its entirety, literally, he is standing up against what he would call the worship of false idols, though forgetting about Christianity as a whole.

Yesterday, I heard his congregation was really only 30 people, and I bet at least one is his wife, and maybe 2-7 are his kids. Where is the news?

Thanks for bringing this up so I could clarify. I probably used the word "religion" incorrectly according to the dictionary, but over the years this word has accumulated a bad rep. To be clear, I am using the word "religion" to indicate extreme beliefs that result in murder as in the day of Jesus when the "religious leaders" turned Him over to Pontius Pilate to be crucified. I do not consider myself religious, but a believer in Jesus Christ. When I think of religion, it brings to mind people that stare down their noses with judgment and distaste. When I think of spiritual beliefs, I associate that with the God of love and His son, Jesus Christ who is the focal point of the bible, and then my fellowman, who God says if we don't love them, we don't love Him. I cannot speak for other belief systems or doctrines.

To bring up your second point of what Muslims tolerate and what they don't goes back to the initial point of religious extremists that instigate murder vs. spiritual beliefs that inspire the care of mankind. Obviously, the guy in question was not an extremist since I am alive and not speaking from the grave, but as I pointed out before a kind and respectful person.

No true religion (and I speak in the purest sense) gives a person the right to murder or ill-treat their fellowman or animals. I also said before, there are religious extremists in every religion which usually results in murder. This is not the will of God. The real motive behind murder is self-promotion, not the advancement of mankind. It is a selfish act as opposed to a selfless act of the giving of one's self. The ultimate goal, I believe, is to have a relationship with the Creator through His son Jesus Christ which was/is/and will be the written word, or the bible. The bible is the standard, I believe. God's design was to have a relationship with mankind cause He wanted someone to love. It's always nice when you love someone, that they give you love in return.

I do not expect everyone to agree and am not shocked by those that disagree. People have freedom of will and have to decide for themselves what their belief system is.

There can be a common bond between religions, if you want to use that word in the correct sense, if there is mutual respect for the other person, but murder is not part of the denominator. We always think we know everything and that everyone should believe like we do, but it is better to err on the side of love than to err on the side of having to be right to the point of murdering someone.:D

Jesus is an extreme lover of mankind

Not only that what they don't know won't hurt them. We could all right at this very moment be secretly burning flags, korans, bibles, witches, the pot roast with impunity.

Yes, for some odd reason it's only the disrespect of their religion that they know about that upsets them.

Depends who you talk to.

Rational Muslim - the real infidels are the extremists are so bat sheet crazy and so uninformed about their religion that they are the ones who are going to hell, not Paradise.

Al Queda - default to reasons 53 and 72 why we should kill the infidels.

Smithsonian had an interesting article recently about how Indonesia (world's 3rd largest democracy and 88% Muslim) is dealing with Islamic terrorists.

"...three-pronged strategy: first, to aggressively pursue terrorists, which has resulted in more than 400 arrests, several executions and the shooting death of JI leader Noordin Mohammad Top in 2009; second, to undercut the popular appeal of militancy by exposing it as un-Islamic; and lastly, to ensure that the government does not create more terrorists by treating prisoners brutally.

?Indonesia has done far better than the United States combating terrorism as far as abiding by the rule of law goes,? said Sidney Jones, a longtime U.S. resident of Jakarta and a conflict analyst with the Belgium-based International Crisis Group. ?There have been no witch hunts, no Guant?namos, no water boarding.? The Yudhoyono government, she said, treats terrorism as a law-and-order problem for the police, and the police in turn use what they call a ?soft approach,? as they did with Nasir Abas. Everyone is charged in open court with reporters present. ?Because of the information coming out of the trials, the Indonesian public became convinced that the terrorists are Indonesians, not CIA and Mossad operatives,? Jones said."
