Regardless of opinions (everyone has one, remember?), it's very exciting when a President visits your back yard! I love the Secret Service, Motorcade, local motorcycle cops, roads cleared and the photo ops, assessments of proper attire, etc, etc......

We've had several visits here by Presidents in the past, but one of the most recent and exciting was the G-8 in Savannah. Pomp AND Circumstance!!!

It is only exciting if you don't see the costs which taxpayers pay to get him here, and the costs which local law enforcement has to pay out of their own budgets for additional security and escorts. I bet the people of Panama City would be better financially if the White House just wrote a check to the local governments. I bet it will cost well over $2-3 million in total costs for his travel. While people in Idaho may see him on the white sandy beaches, the reality is that most people around the country don't find it easy to get to PCB, and they won't come just because the President did.

Funny about Ripley's because our local abc news just announced that Ripley's, Pier Park and Gulf World have been approached with the message that the President has interest in visiting those sites while here on vacation.

Maybe Barack should check the weather before he comes to PCB for the day. It is raining and expected to rain for most of their 19 hour vacation.

This is not a vacation. This is a photo opt and so I am glad that the weather is going to be rainy. Personally, I think his 20 + hour visit is a joke...he is proving nothing.

I never got the idea he was trying to prove anything. Just showing support for the area after a catastrophe and putting his actions where his talk is. He encourages people across the country to support the Gulf Coast economy. Whether you like it or not, that's what he is doing, even if it is symbolic.

Just a reminder to those who seem to have forgotten:

It was the local community that requested this visit. Not the WH imposing it on Panama City. Apparently, the TDC and CofC in Bay County feel it is a positive move for the area.

Do you really believe that his 10-15 minute photo opt on PC beach is going to bring back our vacation folks...perhaps a real stay, but not a "fly over visit". Now if Michele and her friends and her young daughter had made PC vacation destination rather than Spain, I might agree with you

I wasn't aware of that...I did remember when Michelle was there on her visit that she mentioned that it would be "nice" to come there for a vacation, and then she checked out a few tar balls and then I believe she flew on out so she could speak at the NAACP. So her visit was a short one. I guess the TDC and CafC in Bay carry a lot of WH weight, because the local financial burden to secure a Presidential visit, and also the national cost for the visit must be major. If it brings back all of the tourists I stand corrected. But we need to also remember that with schools starting, that this mid August time frame, is a a slowing down for our visiting guests anyway. Perhaps a visit earlier in the summer might have been better.
