Following is a summation of the actions taken by the Walton County Board of County Commissioners during their May 10th, 2016 regular scheduled Board meeting.
The scheduled Public Hearing regarding a Request to amend Chapter 22 of the Walton County Code of Ordinances was continued to a date certain and will be held during the WCBCC regular meeting on Tuesday, June 14th at 4:00pm or soon thereafter at the Walton County South Walton Annex located at 31 Coastal Centre Blvd. in Santa Rosa Beach. The meeting was continued due to a difference in the document that was advertised and what was to be presented.
“It was disappointing that the public hearing for the Beach Ordinance revisions was rescheduled. However, my hope is that citizens from across the county will attend the meeting on June 14 and send a clear message that the ‘private beach’ and ‘no trespassing’ signs, along with the ropes, chains, fences and other obstructions have no place on our shoreline,” said District 2 Commissioner Cecilia Jones. “We need to keep our beaches clean and continue to protect the wildlife on the beaches. We cannot kick this can down the road any longer. That is why I proudly supported this ordinance to tighten up our beach rules, and am hopeful that it receives public support and passes.”
Walton County Sheriff Michael Adkinson gave a brief update on Spring Break 2016 and said that it was overall a successful season. The sheriff also discussed the need to continue have discussion with and market to parents about the importance of working with their juvenile children during the spring break season.
The WCBCC approved to purchase a piece of beach front property off of San Roy Road in Santa Rosa Beach at the outfall of Eastern Lake for $3.25 million. The board will finance the purchase interest free over 10 years. This purchase will complement the recent purchase of the property just west of the location as well as the large parcel that the County currently owns to the north.
