Are you saying that the local leaders have not gone to all the national leaders: Boyd, Miller, Nelson...and requested funding for the widening of this highway?

Then, what on earth were they all doing on all those trips to Washington?

That's not what I am saying at all. I am saying that the locals (voters) need to contact him, especially those who lean Democrat and will actually support him in the voting booth. Back to my original point that Boyd has to be re-elected for the 331 bridge to survive.

thanks for the clarification.

I think most people around here don't realize they have a responsibility to contact their representatives for something like a road being widened...they think that is the business of the ones they have elected; and since I've lived here there has not been an organized effort to get it done--i.e., no commissioner has gone to the local community and said: "We need you to all call Allen Boyd and get him to ask for the funding."

Wonder what would happen if one of them did that?

I voted for Al Lawson--he wouldn't have to be asked to do something like that...

If this is indeed the case, and I don't doubt that it is, it is a sorry commentary on the duties and functions of our elected federal representatives.
I am one who calls my representative all the time. I have only had one(1) return a call and that was a state representative (Marti Coley). What you usually get is, "I'll see the Representative gets your message". Yeah, right. If we are to lose things like the 331 bridge if Boyd is not re-elected, maybe it is time we learned to survive without it until a whole new set of legislators with our interests at heart, are in place long enough to do something about it. Otherwise, its politics as usual and we deserve what we get.

Sadly I see your point, although I do not think Boyd will help us due to the majority of Republicans in this area, he will use his clout to help Democrat areas such as Leon and Gadsden.

But it really makes me angry that i see your point. We elect our representatives to wisely use our money to fund needed projects wherever they are and whatever the politics of the citizens. If the politicians in Washington and Tallahassee cannot see that one two-lane bridge as the only evacuation route for thousands of people is inadequate and should be improved before they build a four-lane circle through the forrests around Tallahassee for example, then "calling" them will not do much good.
Anyone who is familiar with Tallahassee knows what I am talking about.

Please note my earlier comments before throwing Boyd too far under the bus. He has and does support projects IN his district. The reason that the locals (Sowal especially) need to contact him is that the bridge is in Miller's District. It connects to Boyd's district but Boyd's district is only Sowal and not the bay or north of the bay. The nexus is that the bridge is critical to his district.

I agree that it will be a challenge to get support for the bridge construction but I still think emails and calls are important.

If we must operate under such rules then wouldn't it make sense to elect a Republican who would probably owe is election to sowal and could present a united front with Republican Miller?

I strongly disagree that it's a lack of action on the part of constituents that is responsible for our lack of 4 lanes.

Don't give me the padded bill for trips to Washington & Tallahassee, feasibility studies, and lobbyists, and then tell me lack of voter initiative is why it didn't happen.

If voters are really not supportive or vocal about the project, how do they justify all those expenditures supposedly on behalf of this project?

I think he is trying to make the argument that we need more trips to Washington to lobby on our behalf. I just do not understand why we elect someone from this area, and then the taxpayer is suppose to fund the government official to go to Washington to get what we need in this area. All seems like an insider scam to me that some people have learn to play. Instead of consulting us and charging us, why not, Let's Get to Work!

I am just so tired of excuses and expecting us to pay people extra to do what is supposedly their job ......................... not to mention constantly paying for out of area "consultants," "retirement packages," and "incentives/bonuses" to hire people during 10%+ unemployment.

Here's my last post on this topic. First and foremost, I believe that WC local officials are doing what they can to get the project funded. My thoughts were initially in regard to 30A Shopper's post about Lawson vs Boyd. My post was that Boyd is needed to make it come to fruition. That dialogue headed down a long and circuitous path that has ended up that I am advocating for more trips to DC. I was advocating for the local populace to be heard through their elected officials AND through their own actions.

SB- as for local communication. I have a question, who has written an email or a call to Rep. Boyd's office and asked him to support the County's SAFETEA-Lu request for the bridge or highway expansion. Locals have conytacted them about other issues of importance? I am just saying it could make an impact and isn't a lot of work.
