Hello fellow cyclists and residents:As some of you know, Walton County has made a bizarre proposal to place an 8 mphspeed limit on the 30A "bike path" (Timpoochee Trail). This would keepmany of us from having any type of reasonable ride on the path, would keep many from cycling and would force others to ride in the travel lanes of 30A, which canbe a dangerous proposition. Overall, this unnecessary limit would have the effectof discouraging cycling in South Walton County at a time when communities acrossthe nation are encouraging cycling for its many health and environmental benefits. You're invited to an "awareness ride" to help Walton County officialsand local residents understand that we are strongly opposed to a speed limit on the 30A "bike path". The ride will begin at 4 p.m., Sunday August 31 atthe Grayton General Store in Grayton Beach, just south of the intersection of 30Aand Defuniak St. (flashing red light). We will ride east on the "bike path"to Seaside, where we will gather at Raw and Juicy (about 4:30 or so) for some complimentaryrefreshments and some good discussion about bicycle safety along the path and howwe will bring our message forward to the Walton Board of County Commissioners. Ifyou cannot make it for the whole ride, feel free to join the ride at Grayton StatePark or WaterColor along the way to Seaside. multi-use path craziness

Not sure why the formatting was lost in my first post, so here goes again:

this isnt real

"As some of you know, Walton County has made a bizarre proposal to place an 8 mph speed limit on the 30A "bike path" (Timpoochee Trail)."

One of the many things that make this county stand out above others is the demonstrated willingness to share the roadway with cyclists, joggers, walkers and pedestrians in general.

I cant think of any reason to place speed limits on bike trails. If speed is a problem then it has to be fully addressed by posting maximum speeds and minimum speeds. Can a cyclist readily determine the speed they are traveling?

Have the people responsible for this discussed how this was to be enforced?
Have they given any thought to the cost of enforcement?
Will the Sheriff Office agree to enforce bike path speed ord's??
Do they have the jurisdiction to do so?
Will they use radar speed guns or place the ever expensive speed measuring trailers in the "hot spots"?
And what about the judicial system?
Have they agreed to pursue the violators in the event they dont pay the fines?
There are so many more important things to worry about. Let the cyclists enjoy the paths. There are more effective ways to deal with those that violate acceptable use practices of bike paths than to involve the law and give people a record of violations.

Wake up and smell the cappacino, expresso or latte.

What is the county coming to? It takes an instruction manual just to live here!!!! Now more stupid laws that are not enforced!!!!

bike path "awareness ride"

We had a great ride yesterday, with nearly 20 riders ages 8 - 63 who rode along in support of keeping the 30A multi-use path open to all cyclists! Jen at Raw and Juicy fixed us up with some healthy juice after the ride, and we all enjoyed some good discussion about how to make Walton County more friendly to bicyclists and pedestrians.

We'll be bringing forward our message to the Walton County commissioners in the coming days as we work to help them understand that there is no need for a speed limit on the path. The County needs to instead focus on properly maintaining the path, which is often in dreadful condition with loose sand and gravel, potholes, sprinklers spraying the path, and overhanging vegetation that threatens to poke-out an eye. We appreciate the suport of all the Sowallers out there!

Serious question - has anyone had a recurring/major problem w/ speeding bikers on the path?

8mph is ridiculously slow (I COAST faster than that and I don't think anyone has ever thought I ride fast) and people riding too fast is QUITE low on the list of bike/path issues IMO.
