Public Defender Race

New posts
I've been to every forum, debate and rally so far in Walton Co. The only Public Defender hopeful I've met is James Owens. He seems like a nice guy.

I could really care less who wins this race, because I have no intention of using a Public Defender no time soon.

It seems like there are quite a few jobs/positions that people are elected to that in other areas are just a matter of merit/resumes/hiring.

Why are they elected offices here, to avoid impropriety?

The Escambia County Public Defender's office and Jack Behr are endorsing Kelly Richards. She has worked in the office for over 20 years, unlike the other opponents. At the candidate forum, it was evident that Kelly wished to keep working relationships with the employees in the office as well as with the Sheriff's office and the Office of the State Attorney. Owen made it clear that he wanted to make big, expensive changes involving firing winning attorneys that do not support him. Either the employees support him, or they will be fired if he is elected. His speech made him sound arrogant and like he has an insatiable need for control. He is certainly someone who does not need to hold a political office.

Not true. This cop just has a personal issue with James. If you want to know the truth, just call James personally. Kelly's a nice lady, but runs with a sleazy crowd. By the way, not everyone in the PD's office is endorsing Kelly - do your research.

I met James and Kelly both at the forum tonight at the South Walton High forum. I must say they both seemed like nice people, but I was more impressed with James. I did notice that both of the candidates have websites.

I will say this though, the forum tonight at the High School was horrible. The attendance was low and the sound was awful.

The organization that sponsored the forum at SWHS should be commended for doing so, but I was also shocked at how low the attendance was. While it was refreshing to have the Sheriff race first, the already-low attendance dwindled even further as probably 50%, if not more, left after the Q&A with the candidates for Sheriff.

I am really starting to miss the old-fashioned political rallies.

I couldn't agree more. The turn out was really dissappointing. This is another elected office that should never be an elected office. What is with Florida and all the elected offices that should be appointed, anyway?

What's the matter, Lawman/Layman, worried about that incident getting out?
There was no "gossip" on this thread at all . Your comment just makes people want to dig deeper.
