qualifying for mortgages now days?

How difficult is it to get a mortgage now days? Without laying our finances out on a thread, I am trying to get a feel for what we might be up against buying a house now. Had we gotten married a couple of years ago we could now be sweating it out with so many others, having qualified for something way above our means. But here we are, basically newlyweds just starting out, albeit with 6 kids and post divorce carnage still on our records.

It's really not hard at all--if you've got a steady job, low debt-to-income ratio, and cash for a downpayment and to cover the nut for several months...kinda like it used to be in the "olden days.'
