Question about the sand

Beach Comber
Hi,
I was hoping maybe someone could answer a question that I have about the sand on the beach near Stallworth Lake. My husband and I have recently purchased a condo in Santa Rosa beach after renting in Sandestin for vacations for many years. The sand in Sandestin is always white and beautiful, but I find the sand on the beach we use near Stallworth lake to have something black that stays on your feet until you wash them off. I don't mean to sound dumb or anything, but what is that? My thought was that it has something to do with the lake, but I really don't know. I know this has nothing to do with the oil spill, since I have noticed it since we bought the condo in October of last year.

That is most likely coming from the peat which lies beneath the beach sand.

Yes, it has always been the underlayer of fine peat when we wash our feet and legs after coming back from the beach. Nothing new.

I think it's the worst right near the Stallworth walkover. There's enough of it where it's hot oon the feet until you get closer to the water. Travel a few hundred yards either way and it eases up.
