Racist Anti-Mosquers

New posts
I thought this was a community center and now you tell us that they pray there. oh boy.

Yes, among the MANY functions of the multi-faith community and cultural center is space for people to pray.

There's also a gym, a restaurant, a swimming pool, a performing arts center, culinary school, child care center .................

That's why the project will provide 150 full time and 500 part time jobs and take 3 years to build (so the whole opening on Sept 11, 2011 people keep getting upset about is just more propaganda).

The mayor supports it, the proposal passed the neighborhood council 29-1, and the police commissioner has no security concerns.

And while you are flipping out, there's a mosque a block away that was built BEFORE the WTC towers. Apparently after 40 years, folks are now finding that one offensive too. :sarc:

My understanding is that there has been a mosque there for a long time. Very uneventful.

And now that the people who own the mosque are wanting to expand it to include a community center that there is outrage about a mosque.

Mosque was already there in the vicinity of 9-11. And the guy who runs it was so respected that he has appeared on Fox News framed as a moderate before he was framed as an extremist and oh, BTW-

he represents the US government in reaching out to Muslims in other parts of the world to denounce radicalism/extremism.

These are important facts to consider, no?

The Muslim community center would actually probably be more in line with the family values plank of the Republican platform than the Manhattan strip clubs located a similar distance from the WTC site.

What I have read all along is that it, Cordoba House (later named Park51), is to be a community center similar to others in Manhattan, such as the 92nd Street YMCA. It is to have a good-sized Muslim worship space along with other potential activities such as sports areas, child care, restaurant, performing arts center ....

It appears that when it needed local government approval from community boards, preservation commissions, etc the votes were unanimous in favor of it.

The map below is of lower Manhattan (1997). It shows Burlington Coat Factory (site to be developed), the Strip Club Beachmouse referenced, and a Mosque further north established in 1970.

This should never have been politicized imo.

Yes, a muslim jersey (metaphorically speaking). Just as the mob of Cubs fans ridicule the lone Cards fan in the stands the people in the video thought the guy was a Muslim based on his appearance- not based on the content of his character. So again, I ask-
What do you think it was about his appearance that led so many to mistakenly believe he was a Muslim? Mango, you said he was wearing a football cap with a logo, a Puerto Rican Necklace and white athletic jersey. So if it wasn't his attire then suddenly it becomes more plausible that it was a racial thing (I am not saying it was). But an even better question-
Let's say the guy is a Muslim. Does that make it acceptable for the folks in the video to behave the way they did?

IMHO, the only thing more tragic than almost 4,000 people losing their lives because some brainwashed extremists sought the company of virgins is realizing that a majority of our citizens seem okay with it that in the biggest city in America in broad daylight in front of police officers and the media that someone could be in physical danger because of their religious beliefs.

You are making assumptions that Kenny (if that is his real name) was scared, that he wasn't an infiltrator, that Americans in broad daylight allowed this......This thread reminds me of that scene from Men in Black where Will Smith is tested on what he saw and why he shot at what. This was a peaceful protest considering that both sides of the issue were represented. What actually happened was apologies were made to each other, but you don't see that.

Folks are against a proposed 100 Million dollar building that could be 13 stories. It would be the most expensive mosque/center ever built in NYC. New Yorkers are not anti-Islam as evidenced by never protesting any of the 140 mosques in NYC. They seem to take issue with a building that has the potential to be a vector of victory at the site of one of Islamic terrorist's most horrific acts in history. People are concerned where they will be getting all this funding. They state they will be soliciting Muslim -Americans, but this far, they have only risen a measly $18,000. Many mosques are funded by Arab Countries.

It seems the opponents are being criticized, however, most Manhattanites are for the Center, but there is a large faction of the Muslim Community that is opposed to it.

You say I assume "Kenny" is scared or that he isn't an infiltrator. I believe it to be irrelevant if Kenny is scared or if he is an infiltrator so, no- these assumptions haven't crossed my mind.

But since you mention assumptions- I read your article and have no reason to believe it references the same situation/the same parties in the video and am not sure why you would assume it does.

If there was an apology made by the aggressor in the video I would assume it was- "Sorry, I thought you were a Muslim."

Which is my point- the video shows Americans acting kinda crazy because they believe someone is a Muslim.

I saw Men in Black. Not fully with you on how that scene is like the one in the video because we're not stereotyping the folks in the video as being anti-Muslim. They are behaving like they are.

There are a whole lot of megachurches sprouting up across the country. And there are a whole lot of gas stations and liquor stores funded by Arabs.

It seems the opponents are being criticized, however, most Manhattanites are for the Center, but it is actually the Muslim Community that is opposed to it.

Here are some quotes from prominent Muslim/Americans:
I would put them here, but for some reason I can not.

We've seen a whole lot of prominent people of all nationalities/religions oppose things like abolition, women's suffrage, etc. etc.

I wish we would build our own vector of victory in Lower Manhattan-
the world's tallest most grand building at the site of the towers so that any other structure funded and built by any religion, nationality or corporation would pale in comparison.

Part of this issue is that we still have a hole in the ground 10 years later.

Here's the good news for folks who oppose it. I genuinely believe that since this was made out to be such a huge issue that the folks who seek to build it will no longer want to because it is pretty much tainted- and if it isn't tainted yet it will be soon. Right, wrong or indifferent- I don't think it's gonna happen.

The only point that I was trying to make was not everything is as it looks and I consider despicable a strong adjective about a situation presented when all the facts are not considered; or you only see a piece of the whole of a subject you disagree about. That is all I have to say further on the subject.
