I suppose just because he did it by the book doesn't stop it from looking shady. He worked hard to hold politicians accountable in Okaloosa but when it comes to that appearance of impropriety his excuse is, even without the money from my former PAC's I raised more money than everyone combined. Interesting, or should I say SPECIAL INTERESTing...

PAC funds prove controversial for Gaetz
In the last two election cycles, state Rep. Matt Gaetz has counted on a leadership PAC called the Economic Freedom Foundation to influence local election campaigns.

Before beginning his run for Congress earlier this year, Gaetz resigned as chairman of the Economic Freedom Foundation as well as the Free Enterprise Fund, another PAC he chaired.

Soon thereafter, both organizations turned over all of their assets, $380,314, to a Super PAC supporting Gaetz in his run for Florida’s District 1 seat in the U.S. House.

Gaetz, R-Fort Walton Beach, maintains that he resigned as chair of the organizations he used in 2012 and 2014 to fund opponents of sitting Okaloosa County Commissioners because federal election law dictated that he do so.

He said he has had no contact with the PACs, or their new chair Amanda Clark, since he cut ties on March 18.

Gaetz was therefore unaware, he said, that on May 26 Clark filed papers with the state to shut down the Economic Freedom Foundation and the Free Enterprise Fund.

Or that on June 20 the funds left over in both accounts were contributed to a Super PAC called North Florida Neighbors.

“At the time I filed for office I was legally required to resign from the committees I led. I did so and have had no correspondence or communication with that committee since,” Gaetz said. “All decisions made would have been made by the new head of that organization.”

Efforts to reach Clark on Monday were unsuccessful.

The Huffington Post first reported on and questioned the timing of the funds moving from Gaetz’s former committees to the Super PAC he shares with fellow Republican congressional hopeful Neal Dunn.

“Federal coordination rules prohibit any entity controlled by a candidate from making independent expenditures on their behalf,” the article said.

Gaetz said he’s been “viciously attacked” by the Huffington Post before.

“It’s no surprise the Huffington Post would attack a Panhandle conservative,” he said.

But the financial maneuvering also gave those running against Gaetz room to question big money politics.

“It’s one thing to have a Super PAC come in on their side, but coordinating, that’s against the law,” said fellow Republican District 1 candidate Cris Dosev. “One day that money’s in a state account and the next it ends up in a Super PAC.”

Dosev said the congressional race should be about “credibility, experience and maturity” and not money.

Fellow Republican candidate James Zumwalt said “it is incumbent on all voters to research all of the candidates and not just the ones they see more on television.”

Steven Specht, the single Democrat in the race for the District 1 seat, said the timing of the money movement points out the need for a bipartisan congressional review of campaign finance laws.

Gaetz rebutted the comments of his opponents by pointing out that he has raised more money from in-district donors than the other seven candidates combined. He noted that Dosev, a former Marine with Illinois roots, has received significant donations from Peoria.

Candidate Rebecca Johansen Bydlak, Gaetz said, has received donations from Washington D.C.

Dosev countered that many Gaetz donors are men and women who have received favors from Gaetz as a state House members.

“This is pay for play, quid pro quo,” Dosev said. “You want to play, you pay. These people have paid to play and now they’re paying some more.”

And some other news about this.

http://ricksblog.biz/gaetz-former-pac-under-fire/

Yesterday, we reported on issues raised regarding two political action committees once led by State Rep. Matt Gaetz. This morning the Daily News picked up the story – PAC funds prove controversial for Gaetz.

Gaetz told the Daily News reporter Tom McLaughlin that he has had no no correspondence or communication with the Economic Freedom Foundation or the Free Enterprise Fund since he resigned in March.

Since then the PACS have been closed and the funds remaining funds were were contributed to a Super PAC called North Florida Neighbors that has made donations to Gaetz’s congressional campaign.

A few minutes ago, the Rebekah Bydlak campaign sent out an email, subject line “Breaking Information in Gaetz Super PAC Scandal,” that uncovered more information about the relationship between the PACs and North Florida Neighbors:

“In a letter from Economic Freedom Foundation counsel, Bucky Mitchell, dated November 12, 2015, Economic Freedom Foundation informed the Florida Division of Elections that the PAC would not make any further contributions to North Florida Neighbors (link). This letter was sent while State Representative Matt Gaetz was PAC Chairman. As has been previously reported, six months later, on May 29, 2016, the organization then made a contribution of more than $369,000 to North Florida Neighbors.”

The PAC documents on the Florida Division of Elections show that state auditors questioned a $10,000 contribution from Economic Freedom Foundation to North Florida Neighbors made in August 2015 – CampaignDocument. EFF unsuccessfully tried to get a refund from North Florida Neighbors, but the funds had already been obligated – Nov Reply and Jan Reply. Economic Freedom Foundation counsel, Bucky Mitchell, did state that the Economic Freedom Foundation “will not make this type of expenditure in the future” in his November reply, but did not specifically cite North Florida Neighbors.

Gatez Fires Back at Huffingtom Post

Congressional candidate Matt Gaetz fired back at the Huffington Post and some of his Republican primary challengers Tuesday in a phone conversation with the News Journal.

The Huffington Post reported over the weekend that two defunct super Political Action Committees formerly chaired by State Rep. Gaetz contributed about $380,000 to another Super PAC that is supporting his campaign.

Gaetz stepped down as chairman of two statewide PACs — Economic Freedom Foundation and Free Enterprise Fund — three days before announcing his intention to run for congressional office. Gaetz originally planned to run for the state Senate seat occupied by his retiring father, Don Gaetz.

A statewide political committee contributing to a state candidate is OK, but Braden Goodgame, campaign manager for Republican candidate Rebekah Bydlak, said contributing to a federal candidate is "forbidden," citing Florida Statute Ch. 106.

Gaetz denied any illegal activity to the News Journal.

“There was no communication or coordination with the super PAC,” he said.

Gaetz is one of eight Republicans running for the 1st District congressional seat being vacated by Jeff Miller. Gaetz questioned why some of his Republican candidates took a liberal news source such as the Huffington Post at its word.

“I’ve never seen so many Republicans echo criticism of Huffington Post,” he said. “… (My) initial reaction (to reading it) is I think this is about the fifth or sixth time Huffington Post has attacked me, usually because I’m a champion for the Second Amendment. I’m not very surprised Huffington Post doesn’t want to see me in Congress. I’ll be their worst nightmare.”

The Huntington Post further reported the two super PACs filed papers with the Florida Division of Elections to terminate operations on May 20. The two PACs waited about a month to contribute their remaining funds to another super PAC, North Florida Neighbors. That super PAC was established in 2015 to support Republican Neal Dunn in his 2nd Congressional District bid. The Economic Freedom Foundation, a statewide political committee, donated $10,000 to North Florida Neighbors in 2015.

Factual reporting is attacking?

No dog in the fight poppaj...there are 2 sides to every story and the truth is somewhere in between.

I have learned that sometimes there is one side to a story that is true, not in between.

I encourage people (voters) who believe a campaign violation occurred to file a complaint with the proper authorities.

Has anyone said a violation occurred? I read it as reporting what is true and Gaetz has taken offense and claims he is being attacked.

It's not his support of the 2nd amendment, it's his support and representation of corporations over citizens that bothers me.
