The solution is a food.

Hints:

The 1st word can be used when it is alive or dead.
It can be hard or soft, and can come in a variety of colors.

The 2nd word can be measured by miles or tablespoons.
It is a home for some and a food for others.

Cheese can be hard or soft & comes in yellow, white & blue
Cottage cheese can be measured in tablespoons (& miles to the cottage?)
A cottage is a home for some & cottage cheese is a food.
Alive or Dead?

Cheese Cottage? Cottage Cheese?

A culture, say, in yogurt/cheese can be alive or dead.
Cultured Cheese? Cheese Culture? Cheese Curd? (is a curd a home?)

Are we getting closer?
