Ro Cuchens - Fiscal Conservative

Maybe you will get lucky and he will give you $5 million to build a park too.

Will that get me a marina, boats to rent and a guide to take me where the fish are? And a room so I don't have to drive home? He just needs to make sure that my taxes don't go up to do it.

here4good, candidates are not required to live in the district where they are running, unless they are elected, and then, they don't have to live there until the first day they take office. The Supervisor of Elections has nothing to investigate in that matter, prior to the newly elected taking office, and even after that.

Don't wait on newspapers to deliver the news. We live in a small town, and you should be closely connected to your community and active in local government, even if it is only through attending county meetings to see who is doing what. Newspapers get it wrong half the time and many have biased slants. Do your own personal study and it is easy enough to sort out the lies.

I wasn't the one who implied the candidate didn't live here, but thanks for the info.

Newspapers are biased, the commissioners dodge you or stretch the truth, the real discussions on topics take place outside of public meetings. I guess we're doomed to live in a banana republic, it's too much to ask that the local government actually tell us what's going on in some regular fashion.

I understand the need to be personally involved, but I don't think that it's practical for all 30,000+ adults in the county to call the county offices every time they want to know something - and frankly, I've been mislead and misinformed when I did.

I hear others here say, "Well, I called Mike and he said...". Yeah, that's great, but I'm not on a first name basis with the Sheriff and I doubt he really wants to talk to me daily when I have questions.

When the TDC Director fiasco was going on, I had three phone calls and something like 15 emails with the commissioner for this district. If you multiple that times the thousands of voters in District 5, it seems a little inefficient. A public statement from the Commission concerning controversial topics doesn't seem like too much to ask.

I highly recommend a subscription to the Defuniak Herald - they actually report on the current local issues and get this info for you. Between that and Sowal, you can get a very good idea of what is going on.

I agree Scooty- the Herald/Breeze will give unbiased reports on local government stuff (and the op-Ed page thankfully no longer has the ultra right-wing slant of the previous editor. It is a thorough and now a non-partisan news source. Sowal is great for evenore detail, back story, local color, and up-to-the-minute updates!

School board candidates are required to live in their district at the time of qualifying for election.

But our taxes did go up, 225% over four years, and we ended up borrowing the five million dollars, plus another five million for Meadows to use to buy more park land. I thought borrowing like that would be considered deficit spending. Don't worry, we will have it all paid off by 2018 if I am remembering correctly.

I have been told that the money for Meadow's park was actually done after Mr. Cuchens left office and that every current commissioner except C. Jones voted for it. Is that true?

I will defer to Bob Hudson but my memory is that the money had to be agreed to in order for her to go along with the money for Rosier's park.
