Press Release
Walton Co. House Ransacked
Santa Rosa Beach, FL (July 18, 2009) ?

A Walton county man after an extended time away finds that one or more persons had been living in his beach house. The victim called the sheriff?s office to report his three-bedroom, two-story home located on county road 393 in Santa Rosa Beach had been ransacked.

The victim told sheriff?s deputies that he had been gone nine months to take care of his sick mother in Tennessee. Upon his return, the homeowner found that a window on the front side of the house had been lifted, and broken. Authorities believe this was the entry point. The living room was torn apart with trash strewn across the entire residence. The master bedroom also had a hole punched in one of the walls.

The victim says all three bedrooms were torn apart as well, and it appeared that someone had slept in the beds. Even though there were reportedly a number of valuables inside the home, a coin collection appears to be the only thing taken.

A sheriff?s deputy also noted in the kitchen that several glasses had been used, and there was an empty liquor bottle. At this time, sheriff?s investigators are in the process of collecting evidence from the home.

The person or persons responsible can expect to face breaking and entering charge, and possibly additional charges. If anyone has information on the incident, you are urged to contact the Walton County Sheriff?s office at 892-8186.

That stinks, but at least his stuff wasn't stolen. The house can be cleaned & repaired...

Honestly, I am surprised this kind of thing doesn't happen more, with so many vacant properties. Neighborhood watches are a good idea.

aleo -- thanks for posting press releases when appropriate. We know you are on the job.

AL, really appreciate you posting the news releases.

I know someone with a house south of 30A who had items stolen at her house, including a couple of thousand dollars worth of surfboards. Her teenaged kids were hanging out at Seaside where she thought they'd be safe. Apparently the perps were local kids, savvy in zeroing in on naive kids, softened them up with free cigarettes, etc., found out where they lived, and then robbed the house.

She is putting in a burglar alarm.

Yeah, my guess would be local teens finding a convenient spot to party on the ransacking... :(

Kids who give out a shopping list of their home's contents will probably also give out an alarm code.

Good thing they were in Seaside - wouldn't want them to meet criminals who'd give them drugs like they would in those "poor areas". ;-)

...while she's at it, she also needs to teach her kids some "street smarts." Many inhabitants of these local cartoon villages like to pass on the illusion to their kids that they're living a Mayberryesque existence.

I feel bad for this man, not only because his house was ransacked, but also that he didnt have a good enough relationship with any of his neighbors that they would have been on the alert for him being gone and to keep an eye on his house. As Shelly said..... "this aint Mayberry". That was a fictional place even in the 50s/60s.

Though it might not be a real life 'Mayberry', I can say from experience that this area is MUCH more wholesome and kid friendly then most areas. Unfortunately, you will have bad apples anywhere you go in life...even paradise. ;-)
