Scott Maxwell on Gov. Rick Scott: Gov. Rick Scott's budget is full of cuts to 'least among' us, Scott Maxwell says - OrlandoSentinel.com Despite Scott's talk of faith, his budget targets our most vulnerable
Scott Maxwell TAKING NAMES When he's politicking, Gov. Rick Scott spends a lot of time talking about his faith.
During the campaign, he pronounced himself "absolutely" destined for heaven.
During his inauguration ceremonies, he told the audience: "Jesus Christ has been with me all my life."
On the day he unveiled his first budget, he did it inside a church.
And yet as I look through Scott's budget ? which slashes funding to everyone from the sick and the disabled to the poor and the homeless ? I can't help but wonder whether Scott truly believes his budget cares for those whom Jesus described "the least among you."
Especially because Scott managed to find money to double the budget of his own office ? and cut corporate taxes.
There may have been many different voices and ideologies influencing this budget.
I just have a hard time seeing how God's was one of them.
From the Old Testament to the New, God and his earthly voices were very clear on the matter of caring for the vulnerable. It was an imperative.
Moses preached about it in Deuteronomy. Jesus did the same throughout the Gospels.
And yet the budgetary assault Scott has launched upon the least among us is staggering.
He targeted programs that provide eyeglasses and hearing aids to the elderly and the disabled.
He proposed cuts to the departments of Elderly Affairs, Persons With Disabilities, Veterans Affairs and Children and Families.
He wants to completely eliminate Florida's Office on Homelessness and the Medically Needy program, which helps about 40,000 people with serious illnesses and massive medical bills.
Gone may be coverage for kidney dialysis and medication for those infected with HIV.
That last part made chills run down the spines of those at Orlando's Hope and Help Center, which could lose more than half of its entire budget ? more than $3 million used to provide life-sustaining medicine and treatment to those suffering from AIDS and HIV.
