Sexual Predators in SoWal

Did you know that there are at least 10 convicted sexual predators and offenders living in Santa Rosa Beach? And according to the flier that was just posted on my door, there's a brand new one moving to town.

Their crimes read like your worst nightmares: "Lewd or lascivious conduct with a victim under 16 years old; Involuntary deviant sexual intercourse (rape); Sexual Battery on a child under 12 by an adult," and so on.

What are we doing--or NOT doing--that is making our community so inviting to these scumbags? What can we do as concerned citizens to discourage them from settling here, if anything? Remember, even if you don't live right next door to one of these guys, they frequent the very same grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, parks and beaches as you and your children. And they drive past our schools and bus stops every day.

At the very least, I suggest that everyone visit this website to learn more about these thugs. Teach your kids to be alert!

Should there be concern for our children when it comes to sexual assault? Yes. Should the laws be changed somewhat on registering what the gov't calls sex offenders? Absolutely.

Notice to Offenders:

Beginning October 1st, 2007, you are required to report all of your e-mail addresses and Instant Message names to FDLE. You may do this online using the

A friend had me check that website when shopping for property. I was completely freaked out for most of the day. They all look evil and like they eat roadkill.

What is wrong w/ the current classifications?

Sex offenders are freaks who prey on children. Save your sympathy for those who deserve it.

So where should they be sent? And they've been frequenting the very same grocery stores, restaurants, etc., for the past 50 years, commingling with you and me.

We have 1,000's up here - up and down the streets in public. A few live quietly in surrounding upscale neighborhoods near where I live. A few are teachers, some are (were) Sunday school teachers. Some are Boy Scout leaders and coaches. Most continue to live in their homes with their families. About the only thing you can do IS teach your children. But sadly, you're also going to have to accept it as a fact of life.

I'm not defending rapist and child sex abusers. I am simply noting that SOME of the sex laws in our country are a bit too inflexible. Take the example of the young man in GA, who was imprisoned for rape, statutory rape in particular. His girlfriend and he had consensual sex. She even tried to defend her boyfriend in Court. He was maybe 17 and she was 16, I think. He was convicted of statutory rape and labeled a Sexual Predator. As the young man sat in jail, the GA Legislature pushed and changed the law, based upon his case as an example. However, they didn't make it retroactive and he stayed in jail. Finally, a few months ago, he was released when the GA Legislature decided that not making the law retroactive was a bad decision.

Again, there are some real sexual criminals out there who should probably be castrated as well as incarcerated, but as I understand it, not all people labeled
"sexual predators" are deserving of the title, which will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

Regarding the question why they are moving here? Maybe they always lived here, or maybe the sex offender laws don't allow them to live in towns, due to the close proximity of places where they are not allowed to live, such as schools, day care centers, etc.

Some are Boy Scout leaders

Not if they are tagged with the 'sex offender' label. All adults who volunteer with the Boy Scouts are subjected to a nationwide criminal background check. Those deemed a threat to youth are quickly booted.

No doubt. But they once WERE scout leaders. And were in direct contact with kids.

Thanks for correcting the tense. One of the reasons the organization is so diligent about weeding out the threats is because it is a target-rich environment. I was personally involved in delivering the news to those whose help was not wanted.
