A client of ours came in the office last week. He had just returned from vacation in Sowal the week before. I told him I would be going down for Labor Day. He then told me he wasn't trying to scare me but the night before he left they took a helicopter ride over the beach and the amt of sharks he saw close to the beach amazed him.
Sharks are always there, we just don't see them. While I don't recommend it, I've found that when I swim towards sharks and barracudas while snorkeling, they run away.

they are controlling you with FEAR. Go swimming for heaven's sake
Who, the sharks or posters like SJ? ;-)
I'm still swimming every day.
I've done some truly stupid stuff and lived to tell the tale, and don't consider swimming in the Gulf in that category--it's just that I don't want to be chomped on.
Joe if/when you get out this way give me a shout.

As a diver - I have seen sharks numerous times - they truly aren't interested in humans. I would never give up the beautiful things I have seen in and around the ocean for the tiny chance of being bitten by a shark - but I also will never put bait in my pocket either while fishing or swimming in the ocean. Sharks really are awe inspirings to observe when you are in their home.

a few years ago, my orthopedic surgeon was scuba diving with his wife in the bahamas (they do this regularly and do a lot of underwater photography). but on this trip, they encountered a shark who attacked the wife and severed her arm at the shoulder, almost completely. the arm was saved after several surgeries (some very experimental) and very long recovery.

I don't think sharks are out to get us, but if we are in their territory, then there is always a risk. there is no predicting the behavior of a shark or any wild animal, fish ,etc......
I say be well-informed, prepared, skilled (swimmer, diver, boater), and be alert and respectful of the ocean environment you are exploring.

Very interesting show on Discovery AGAIN this week. The team spent 12 days on a boat (I think in Africa) to monitor and study the Great White.

The team actually swam OUT of the cage and photographed/video'ed the Great Whites. One very courageous/insane handler actually took a ride on a few of them; grabbed on to the dorsal fin and went for a ride....... Any one else watch that....????

The other morning, when crossing Hwy 98 (I had the green light), I looked both left and right, then left again, and saw a young lady driving a minivan at 65+mph (my guess) in a 45 mph zone (AND SHE HAD A RED LIGHT) and didn't look like she was going to stop, so I waited. Good thing I did because she just looked at me like :idontno: when I tooted the horn and extended my middle finger while pointing at the redlight. Forget shark bites/attacks. I will take my chances with the risk of shark bites over the risks of riding on the hwy in this town. At least when I am on the water, there is little risk of getting ran over by a stupid driver who is out to kill someone with their vehicle. I wish that I had a rocket launcher on my car that could shoot rotten eggs at rotten drivers.

Sharks may scare me sometimes (only from watching the movie JAWS too many times as a small kid), but people scare the living crap out of me almost every day on the road.

No, but sarafunn made me watch the show on Friday night...Sharks Having Sex. It was all about stalking the grey shark to see how it mates. Something I do not care to see again.

SJ...I am glad you still look both ways before crossing the street. That was a close call.
