Single Day Road Trip Ideas

New posts
Haven't ventured out from here since I moved here this year, love it here but need to get away for a day. Besides here, what's the best thing to go check out within a 200 mile or so radius? (for this weekend). fyi, i love it all-- nature, history, entertainment, whatever.

i searched 'road trip' and didn't find much.

thanks!

:welcome:

did you check the calendar on here?
There's a paddle up at Morrison Springs this Sunday with Walton outdoors and 30A radio. Appalachilcola /Mexico beach is a nice day trip. There are caverns in Bonifay? i think. Tallahassee might have some funn stuff going on too. if you like outdoor things, check Waltonoutdoors.com calendar or just check the blogs for neat things to do. Have funn!

Pensacola, Defuniak Springs, Apalachicola, Tallahassee, Ecofina (canoe or kayak) and Florida Caverns are all great one day road trips.

Dothan has a cool modern art museum and an old Opera house, but not much else.

There are so many day trips to take. Suggestions so far are excellent. Don't forget about some of the best historical and environmental treasurers right here in Walton County.

Eden State Gardens in Pt. Washington has the historic Wesley House (has second largest Louis XVI furniture collection in US) along with beautiful gardens and nature trails. New picnic area and kayak launching area, etc.

DeFuniak Springs has the Walton County Heritage Museum in historic train depot with Caboose; oldest working library in Florida; Chautauqua Building, unique downtown shops and tearooms, Hotel DeFuniak; and Chautauqua Winery on I-10 and 331.

Highest spot in Florida is at Walton County's Britton Hill at Lakewood Park near Paxton. (Up 331 north)

See SoWal blogs for more ideas on environmental and history venues in Northwest Florida. Have fun.

If we absolutely must leave Walton County, our favorite day trip is Tallahassee (like you couldn't tell ) but occasionally we go over there when no sports are taking place.

Mission San Luis, Lake Jackson Archetechural Site (read: Indian Mounds), and if you like antiques, just a few miles up US 27 from Lake Jackson is the town of Havana. If I'd have had $7K extra the last time I went, I'd have a gorgeous pine bedroom suite.

South of town, Wakulla Springs is cool and you can do St George Island & Apalachicola on the way back.

East of town, Moore's Antique Car Museum (he has the original Batmobile!). Also, if you like pretty roads...go down I-10 to I-75 (yawn), south to Lake City, get on Hwy 90 and head back west on 90 to Tallahassee. Some of the prettiest countryside you will encounter locally. How such a pretty drive and the worst, more boring, longest stretch of interstate in this entire state can traverse the same area is beyond me.

Back in Tallahassee, go downtown to the Visitors Information Center for suggestions on canopy roads. They are awesome. :D

The Naval Aviation Museum at N.A.S. Pensacola is a must see. You don't have to be a "plane nut" to appreciate it.

The Blue Angels are having their homecoming show Friday and Saturday November 13th and 14th at Pensacola NAS. It is always a great time!
