Smashed fingers

New posts
I've been twitchy about younger kids and door and drawers of all sorts since my kids were weensy. More than a couple of (in the house) finger pinches over the years but we managed to skate the car door thing. Now it's the grandkids ;-)

Given the multitude of hazards in the world, I've always considered it a minor miracle if a kid makes it to adulthood relatively unscathed.

Ocean Lover, I am sooooo sorry, what a horrible experience.

TANGENT: Little Otter got the cast off yesterday & now is in a sling...yeahhhhh... so this will all be over before you know it.

NOW, back to OL's daughter.......

My grandson, who is 11 now, had the end of his finger cut off when he was 2 years old. Someone at his daycare wasn't paying attention and let the big exterior door close on him. It was his index finger on his left hand; he was already left handed at that point. Bottom line, he learned to eat and draw with his right hand while he was in a cast. It was very traumatic, and still gives me the chills 9 years later. I hope your daughter is doing better. Kids bounce back so much faster than their parents/grandparents!

Oh my goodness, is he still missing part of his finger? My daughter is a little concerned about the nail falling off. Tonight we took the bandage off and one finger looks great and the other looks bad, like the nail is a goner for sure. I bought a splint for her today so when she goes to camp tomorrow she'll be protected. They are still very sore. Just glad it's not something worse.

I'm sure everyone remembers a time where they smashed their fingers in the car door or a door of some kind. I'd been lucky up until now with my kids. Tonight my daughter was especially tired after a long day and closed the van door on her hand. ( I still don't know how she did it...she's 11) I automatically hit the lock button when closing my door so the door locked when she closed it. I have never heard a scream like that! My heart is still pounding. I didn't know what she did and she was trying to tell me to unlock the door but I couldn't understand her for a few seconds. It was terrible. I fumbled for my keys and hit the unlock button and we got it open. Her fingers on her left hand were immediately purple. We went inside and I got ice and then decided we better go to the urgent care. What a night...nothing broken thank goodness. They burnt a little hole in each nail to relieve the pressure. I thought my daughter was going to faint! She wanted to watch but she probably shouldn't have. It was pretty gross. Lots of blood. She said it felt a lot better after that was done and her fingers were all wrapped up. I was relieved...I hate it when my child is in pain. I guess this is one of those things you only do once...or seen done once. My son witnessed the whole thing and he was a little freaked out too! I'm sure he's going to enjoy telling his friends how he watched the Dr. burn holes in his sister's fingers. Anyway, that was our exciting night. Glad it's over.

:( That sounds so scarey. Hope she's not in too much pain.

He had to have surgery on it a couple of days later because he developed an infection. He was missing the tip of the finger to the bone. This sounds pretty gross but he was able to repair the end with a flap of skin and he only lost about 1/4 of the nail. I don't remember anymore if he lost the nail for awhile or not, but he has one now, it's just a little stubbier than the others. Just watch her, if it gets infected she'll need another dr. visit. I think his infection was caused by the bone being exposed, they cleaned it up at the ER but obviously it needed more attention. He's great now, doesn't have any numbness. Isn't 11 a great age!! She sounds like a little trooper.
