South Walton High School Gets A+

I serious question the label "honors" if you only read 2 books and didn't analyze them.

My english teachers would consider that "remedial" if you did that in a week, let alone an entire class.

They also flunked you if you didn't do your homework.

Well, I think the teacher of the class was very open that she didn't think the class was taught at an "honors" level. But she seemed to think there was nothing she could do because of the students that were in the class.

She said that she thinks there should be three levels of English classes, so that way the "honors" students could actually be in a rigorous environment to prepare them for college.

She said the honors classes were really like normal classes and the normal classes were like remedial classes.

I'd tell you what my teachers would have done - it would involve a lot more work and a lot of low grades if you didn't meet their standards. And you would be going to "regular" english if you couldn't hack it in "honors." ;-)

And if your parents questioned it, they would be asked why the teacher is expected to give passing grades to a student who is not doing the assigned work or participating in class.

If you were really lucky, someone would push Mrs. K's buttons and the class would get a scathing lectures about the realities of life in the real world where you have to actually do work, noone gives a rip about your excuses, and your mommies and daddies aren't there to wipe your bottoms for you.

But I don't see it as the teacher necessarily being at fault. One simply cannot have a strong high school English class unless the students participate and have done the reading.

I personally blame the students in the class rather than the teacher.

Unless of course the teacher has the power to determine who is in the honors English class. Which I don't think she does.

Teachers should be able to make students in an honors class do the work and participate.

The slacker/unprepared defense has no place in an "honors" class IMO.

Either you do the work, or you don't get (because it's a privilege) to stay in the class.
