Nooga dwellers, RO, what's the story behind the name suck creek? I'm seeing it on realtor.com. Is this a family name/ Does it have to do with a Ross Perot speech? Just curious.

I can't believe that Suck Creek made it on the SoWal boards :funn: . I lived in Suck Creek for several years. Beautiful setting in the TN River Gourge. Anyway, here's the story.

Before the TN river was dammed it used to be a "wild" river. Very fast flowing and flooded alot. The area known as Suck Creek is a very narrow and deep stretch of river that is also intersected by a Suck Creek. The current was so strong that riverboats had to be pulled through the Suck with mule teams on the shore. Lots of stories about boats being sucked under by whirlpools. Suck Creek is still a very swift part of the river and there are still whirlpools (Not dangerous) but they are there. Here is a pic looking towards Suck Creek in the TN River Gourge. As you can see the river narrows and takes a hard left.

Well, that opened my eyes this morning, seeing Suck Creek on this board!

RO--That is a great description of the area. Did you used to live in Marion County?

Bob, this is a beautiful area- on Suck Creek Mountain between Chattanooga and eastern Marion County is Prentiss Cooper State Forest and Wildlife Management Area. There are undeveloped areas and there are a few developed areas with really nice houses built out on the bluffs overlooking the TN River Gourge.

In my early 20's I lived in the River Canyon Apartments for 5 years. For $450 a month, I had a 2 bd apartment overlooking the TN River Gourge, and a dock where we kept our water toys. FUNNNNN time . It was really cool to see all the seasone in the Canyon. Fall was always amazing

that was too weird of a name not to ask....thanks for the story...by the way signal mt. property looks reasonable

you thinkin of movin?
My wife was born near there and we are deciding on a home north of Orlando not at the beach. family has a nice home in Kingsport Tn that we would be easy to aquire, but that area is quirky...but it's family. my wife's side of the family has a presence in blountville tn that goes back to the 1790's. Nooga looks to be much more interesting/fun place to be. parents were born/raised in Atlanta. All I can say is the next 3-5 years a decision will be made, as Orlando has not been a Southern city for 20+ years. We want to live in southern city and making a choice is fun.

the nice thing about nooga is that it's so close to the "big" cities....Atlanta, Nashville, Knoxville, B'ham, are all just a couple of hours away. You can drive 3 1/2 hours & be in Asheville, or 6 hours & be on Grayton Beach. We're blessed to have a river & mountains so there are lots of outdoor activities.

Problems are schools & jobs.....if you need those you better do some research
