Summer camps for kids in SoWal

New posts
This is a good option. But SPICE is fine too, if you can get in. Perhaps with the new programs opening, the overfill at SPICE has eased off.

We loved the field trips - most were arranged so that the kids will be the only ones at the attraction. Also, for skating, the rink is only open for SPICE kids. At least this is how it was for the 6 years my son went. The only issues we ever had were a sunburn, which stopped the trips to the water park (childcare providers are not permitted to touch a child in order to apply sunscreen, and this was before spray sunscreen was perfected), and also the time there was the forest fire and the SWFD/WCSO *forgot* that 80-something children were in two portables behind Butler Elementary.
They went to the water park last year and little IBD had some MAJOR burns on her shoulders. I even sent spray sunscreen. I understand that there are alot of kids but in the middle of the day...sun beating down...needless to say she did not return. Some say that was a bit radical but......

other than that incident I did not have any problems with SPICE....

I'm sorry IBD :( ; I didn't know they had resumed with the waterparks (we've been out of Butler SPICE three years now, and SS was in third grade the last time they took that particular trip). I pitched a fit the first time he came back sunburned, and that's when I learned about the "touching" policy. The next time they went, he was only red in spots because he and his freckled, fair-haired buddy took turns putting sunscreen on each other. The last time, he was only a little pink because I had slathered him with six coats of waterproof sunscreen, BUT many of the other kids plus all of the adults got burned. There were a few outdoor fun days that got canceled because everyone was too sunburned to move, much less go outside.

That being said, it was our only option for elementary-age childcare, and Ms Debbie did an awful lot for what she had to work with. I do hear that they are no longer in the portables. :D
