I've done Crab Trap tri the last four years- two times it was absolutely beautiful, and two times the weather was awful. In 2003, they canceled the swim altogether because of bad surf, and the rest of the race was in heavy rain and wind. (I crashed my bike that year, but fortunately the pavement was wet so I slid instead of sticking and my body protected my bike from damage so I could still finish the race) In 2004, they cut the swim in half because of rough but somewhat tolerable surf. But at that point, everyone was happy to be racing at all because they'd only recently reopened the park after Ivan damage. Last year was Chamber of Commerce perfect down to the dolphins hanging around the first swim turn buoy.

It's a fun race with generally pretty high local content, and the food afterwards is generally pretty good.

How does the ocean swim work? Do you swim straight out and back or swim along the shore line?

It's generally three sides to a rectangle- about 50 yards out, turn at the buoy, 300 yards parallel to shore, 50 yards back in. You don't have to be a particularly fast swimmer, It's more important to be comfortable and competent in somewhat choppy water than anything else, and if you've spent time playing in waves, that actually goes pretty far to getting you comfortable and competent.

I've done some swim coaching from time to time so if you've got any questions on the sport, I can do my best to answer.

I have heard to swim effeciently one should take lessons. Unlike running and biking where just doing it you get better. I think I'm no good at distance swimming because every sport I play usually involves the "Scorched Earch" Technique

i was watching a show on one of the hd channels last night about freestyle diving - anyone ever seen this sport ? these people dive in the ocean, and hold their breath, no oxygen tanks, etc. the show was about a 53 year old freestyle diver who is setting all these records. she set the world record for holding her breath - 6 mins 21 sec
