Yawn.

Rinse, Repeat: ?The Surge? was never supposed to measure success on limited tactical victories, but on an overall strategic goal of creating enough security to foster national reconciliation. No such reconciliation has occurred. In fact not even the smallest steps towards a power sharing arrangement between the majority Shia government and the Sunni minority has been made.

Therefore my original assessment of the Surge still stands ??Too little, too late.?

The Sunnis have largely stopped fighting while they seek to cut a deal to get a place at the table in post-Saddam Iraq. And the Shiites have stopped fighting the Americans for at least six months, they say -- and why not? With the Sunnis standing down, the US would be focusing all its firepower on the Shiites. Looks a lot more like the lull before the storm than any lasting peace.

6thGen, why don?t you reflect on the most interesting part of the current situation. -You know, the success that US Forces have had cutting deals with the Sunnis to stabilize large areas of Iraq? Sound familiar? Of course, it was MY suggestion from a few months ago.

We are going to have far more success with this tactic than continuing to rely on ?The Surge? to produce any lasting stability; or a unified democratic Iraq.

I find it odd that you have chosen to rear your head on this topic again, now, as most of my original points have been vindicated by the current situation.

You mean how we instilled a Sunni strongman and turned a blind eye to his incredulous human rights violations to allow him time to restore order, while the Kurds broke off from Iraq to establish Kurdistan? Just like you planned, eh comrade?

How about posing the question of saving 3500 GI's lives and half a trillion dollars to take out Hussein. Oh yeah, we don't ask questions that way for the "polls".

Maintaining our freedom and protecting our country have never been free of charge or free from lost lives. Wish it was, but that isn't the case.

"Freedom ain't free" is a justification for being a world bully. You fight only when you have no other choice. Preemptive war is the biggest crock of doublespeak ever invented. Iraq did not ever threaten our peaceful existence.
