There's the Sirata and Tradewinds, both on St. Pete Beach. Tradewinds is very nice and I'm pretty sure they have suites. Last time I passed by the Sirata I wasn't that impressed, but I think they may have been renovated.
Clearwater Beach is insane and you don't want to go anywhere near it with teenagers. I'd stay closer to St. Pete Beach. So much change going on down there, and I don't get down that way that much -- wish I could be more specific.
Downtown St. Pete is also really hoppin'. I can't believe it; it was a ghost town 15 years ago, but it is beautiful now, with some shopping, movies, lots of restaurants and a pretty good nightlife. It is a beautiful downtown, right on the waterfront. So if you're down for a week it's a good place to go for a change of pace.

Sorry for the hijack, Franny, but I was wondering if anyone could recommend a hotel in downtown St Petersburg? We are giving very serious thought to celebrating our anniversary with a little trip to the Tampa Blues Festival in early May. We don't need anything fancyschmancy, but I wouldn't mind a pool. Sometimes it's kinda hard to research on the 'net because places do not always live up to what you see on a little screen.

The highest end is the gorgeous Renaissance Vinoy Resort, which 15 years ago was in shambles but has been gloriously restored and has been a wonderful operation since the mid-90s. The St. Petersburg Hilton (www.stpetehilton.com) is a favorite. It's in the middle of everything, it's very nice, and as a Hilton it is reliable. But the Hampton Inn might be the best choice (www.stpetehamptonsuites.com). I have only walked past it but it only a couple years old and in a great location. Seems reasonably priced. Close to BayWalk and everything else.
