Land mines are an unfortunate and long lasting result of modern warfare - killing and maiming civilians decades after conflicts are over.
Enter a furry solution to a nasty problem:
Bart Weetjens is training rats to detect landmines! Using the rats they can demine an area for 14 cents a sqr foot (60-70% cheaper than metal detectors) and a rat can do 60 sqr yards in 15 minutes - which takes a manual deminer all day to do!
Plus, the rats don't need batteries, maintenence, and can be used by the locals instead of $$$ experts.
The rats are currently at work in Mozambique and will soon begin working in Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Columbia!
