about your best friend growing up.

Kitty, met her in the 5th grade at a private school in Florence, SC. We were best friends for years, until my ex came along and hogged all my time. Have recently reconnected via facebook and we have caught up and picked up where we were so rudely interrupted
I found out that she was very upset with my ex for taking away our friendship.

I am a lucky girl to have most of the same core girlfriends from the crib room at the church and elementary school with a couple of additions from junior high and high school. There are 9 of us still have parents in our hometown and some of them live in our hometown so we see each other pretty regularly, 1 girls family moved away in the 8th grade but she's still in Texas so I see her 3-4 times/yr and we and talk a lot via email, FB, text and phone.

Anne Michelle, Jennifer C, and I were born within 4 months of each other, our parents were in the same Sunday school class and we've known each other our entire lives. Kylie joined the group as a toddler:). We met Kari in the 1st grade then met Denise and Jennifer W and Shannon in the 2nd grade. In the third grade, I played softball with a girl named Jennifer D and we ran into each other at the family reunion and learned we're 3rd cousins, shared great-great grandparents! We all became friends with her friend Amy our freshman year in high school.

We had a million slumber parties, hay rides, halloween parties, and more. We grew up in a town of 14,000 so we were in dance class, gymnastics, played soccer and softball together as well. We have a hugely long history since we're all 36 or 37 now! We know everything about each other and the full history. Thru the years, some of us grow closer to one or the other and that continues to evolve as we do but the core group remains strong and close. We've been thru binge drinking, boyfriends, moving off to college, marriages, babies, moving out of state, divorces, family illness, loss of a child, loss of a sibling, a zillion girls nights of dinner and chatting. We all have friends outside of the group, but the group is where we get to be our total selves-the good, the best, the bad, the ugly and the downright scary! The next generation and hubbies are invited a couple of times a year for total group/family bonding.

Last year, Jennifer W read the book, the Girls from Ames while vacationing at SoWal and was emailing us quotes from the book that applied to us. I'm in the process of reading the book and at times it's freakishly applicable to our friendship but sadly, I find the story more clinical and not capturing the heart of the friendship fully.

My favorite true friend story: in the 5th grade there was a mean girl named Penny and she had an older sister so she thought she was so cool-and maybe she was for a 5th grader. She and I did NOT like each other and she told all of the other girls at our lunch break not to be my friend or they couldn't be part of the group. Jennifer C and Anne Michelle picked me over the big group of 5th grade girls and over the peer pressure-26 years later, that still sticks with me!

I'm glad this post was started as I've been millling all of this around the past days as I've been reading this book.

great story, bba!

My best friend Carol. We grew up together in New Orleans. Met when we were 5. Been best friends for 48 years. Meeting in Destin next week. Can't wait.

That's a great story, BBA! I thought about this over the last few days since DD started the thread. My core is strong, but in a different way as they aren't all friends. From first grade, Renee.....we experienced and learned a lot together, but her Daddy was a builder and they moved way across town, in the boonies, when we were in Jr. High School - a different county! We were sad; couldn't ride our bikes to each others' homes! She started public schools and I remained in private. But, we would meet every Fri. night at the skating rink (on her side of town) and with her move, she brought a whole new group of funn boys to the mix! Our friendship brought our parents together and we are all still great friends today. She got married right after HS; I took off to see the world.

Then, in high school, a new group of girls and a completely different bond than grammar school. We experienced and learned a lot together, traveled to strange places, still gossip, play, try new things, cry together and laugh like it's commodity. One common denominator is how unconditional we all are with one another. I  my girls!

Canoehead - we met in middle school and have been best friends ever since - despite being total opposites in almost every way, going to different colleges, and currently living across the country from each other (thank you Gchat).

The joke is that we "share a brain" because despite our vastly different interests/personalities/choices we agree on all the important things/have the same values and know exactly what the other is thinking/feeling - helpful when we were a debate team in high school, but indispensable for adults dealing with major life decisions and relationships.
