The American Flag

To me the American Flag is the Badge of our Country . A badge that has been proudly hailed and blood has been given to protect the Country this badge represents. I saw somewhere that the question "Why do we pledge to a flag?" My answer was best presented by a very honorable and respected American years ago. I thought I would share this with those of us that remember him and these words. Red Skeleton and the Pledge.

I

me, an individual, a committee of one.Red Skelton 's Pledge of Allegiance

Pledge

dedicate all of my worldly goods to give without self-pity.

Allegiance

my love and my devotion.

To the Flag

[of the]our standard, Old Glory, a symbol of freedom. Wherever she waves, there's respect because your loyalty has given her a dignity that shouts freedom is everybody's job.

United

that means that we have all come together.

States

[of America]individual communities that have united into 48 great states. 48 individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose, all divided with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common purpose, and that's love for country.

and to the Republic

For Which It StandsRepublic ... a state in which sovereign power is invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern. And government is the people and it's from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people.

One Nation

One Nation ... meaning, so blessed by God.

Indivisible

incapable of being divided.

With Liberty

which is freedom, the right of power to live one's own life, without threats, fear, or some sort of retaliation.

And Justice

the principle or qualities of dealing fairly with others.

For All

For all ... which means, boys and girls, it's as much your country as it is mine.

That's just an interpretation of the pledge according to Mr. Skeleton. That still doesn't answer the question of WHY we do it.

My answer would be to that statement because we choose to and that we can. Because of the respect in the past and the trust and faith that was put into the FLAG and its country. We have the Freedom to choose and others have that same freedom to choose not too. Our country is so great. We have the choices and the prettiest flag in the world in my opinion. That opinion has been allowed to be made public and in this forum by the ones who defended our country and that Grand Ole Flag.
I have personally defended this Flag in 3 conflicts in my lifetime. Knowing that what I was doing would allow me and my children and grandchildren the choices. As well as anyone else. I Pledge my Allegiance to this Flag and I respect my country that others pledged their lives for so that WE might enjoy these freedoms.

you defended the flag?

I remember televised reruns of some of Red Skelton skits from the 50's and 60's. I don't think he was funny...at all. Maybe he really should have gone into politics.

Yes, and God willing I would do it again even for you to be able to enjoy the freedoms we have in this wonderful God Blessed Country of ours. It is with honor that many laid down their lives for this country and her badge "The Flag" so that you and you wife might enjoy the choices to do as you wish. The choice to educate young children in itself is a great service to our country. The Flag is the beauty that represents America the beautiful to all those who look at her and envy what many here take for granted. Our freedom. This day my own son is serving this wonderful country he too loves and honors the flag that represents the country his children are learning and growing in. He is willing to die for all of us to continue to enjoy these privileges that freedom brings. Yes I am proud of him. I fear for him, I pray for him, I know that he knows what he is exposed too. He made the choice so that others such as yourself can continue to enjoy your life in this country. Much as his father done in the past. It?s more then a "FLAG" it shows PRIDE, LOVE, COMPASION, and UNITY, but most of all the many FREEDOMS this country have. I hope this answers your question.

As a comedian I think you?re correct. I to find it hard to find him funny, But back in the day they were not reruns we laughed I think because it was something new. Seeing TV back in the beginning was something to admire even in black and white. My Mother was a maid for a well to do family back in those days, They gave my Mother a hand me down TV one day and we thought we were the TOP dogs on our road. We had family nights with several families coming over to watch TV with us everyone would cook a dish and we would play until night fell and the TV station came on. The shows were pretty crude compared to todays, but we had a ball! Sorry about the rant, just a trip down memories lane for me.
