The Help

New posts
I enjoyed reading the book, but the way black people were treated disturbs me and I can remember vividly the treatment from my childhood. My sister and I always sat in the 'back' at our doctor's office with our beloved Mary Lizzie. Just could never understand why she could not sit upfront with the white folks and it pisses me off to this day. And as the book said, no one ever talked about it. But if Mary Lizzie was ever mistreated in front of my mother you better watch out! Oh well I have rambled enough!!

I hear the movie is cute and will wait for the video. Franny, I hear you. Nothing has changed. Look at illegal immigrants. And the people in other countries who now do our slave work. Probably treated worse than slaves but a world away where we don't have to share even a lobby.

I am furiously reading the book now and plan to see the movie this weekend. So far, I like the book. Will report back.

I saw the movie last night. Really liked it. Feeling of shame that "the help" was treated that way. Couldn't believe the Mississippi laws at the time. Will now read the book.

Emma Stone is the best female comedian to come along since Lucy and Carol. And can do serious better.

The book could have been set in many times and places - including now.

The only thing that changes is the group being mistreated - the concerns, behaviors, and social acceptability remain the same.

The book is really wonderful and everyone should read it. It's funny because when I see the commercials for the movie it looks like the movie is a little lighter than the book. My book club read it and the discussion was fascinating. One of the most interesting things is to read the background on why the author wrote the book!
