By the grace of God, I submit the following trip report:
Uneventful drive down to Louisiana on Friday except that there are NO INTERSTATES IN THE STATE OF TEXAS THAT ARE FINISHED!!!!!!!!
Construction on every interstate. Blinding mofo rain between Beaumont and Orange. Good food Friday night. See other thread.
Saturday: Went to what used to be Holly Beach where my uncle had a camp until Rita came along and turned the whole community into a moonscape.
This used to be a thriving little community.
We could not even for sure figure out where his camp had been.
Sat. night: Had some fabulous Okra-Tasso gumbo!! Will post recipe at some point.
Sunday: Headed for home around 9:30 am. Had a little uncheduled tour of Sulphur before we left, but finally got on the right road. Decided to take a different route home because of the construction issue.
About 100 miles into the trip, we came upon the biggest lovefest ever!!
These, my friends, are LOVEBUGS! Now, Mango, you know why no one feels the LOVE!
Forged on, through the literal BLIZZARD of bugs--I was, BTW, ATTACKED by these critters during the filming of the above and yes, some were harmed.
Have brilliant idea that we'll have a late lunch in Canton (world famous for First Monday Trade Days) at the Dairy Palace that has the absolute BEST freakin' cheeseburgers EVER! By the time we reach Canton, we're starving, but it was absoutely worth the wait! Return to interstate
bang: ) and about two miles down the road we hear on the radio that I20 is shut down about one mile ahead of us....bad accident.
Rain slick roads. I finish my cheeseburger while sitting in stopped traffic with no exit in sight.
After about an hour, my daughter finally talks me into crossing the grassy median over to the service road. Come over a little rise on the service road and there's where the highway patrol has everyone exiting.
The service road then dead ends and was forced to turn left onto a country road.
Interstate traffic in Hooterville, Tx. This is where we passed a manufactured home with the whole family out in the front yard. The youngest of these children was on a leash held by her "mother".
FINALLY get back on the interstate and the monsoon begins. Two hours of it raining like a mofo, bug juice washed off. Finally home. Grandkids here....
more later..................
