Best airport to fly into is Ft. Walton (VPS), only 45 minutes' drive. Pensacola is sometimes less expensive, but is 1 hr. 45 min. drive (mostly freeway) and I think the Bay Bridge is still under construction since Hurricane Ivan took out that eastbound span. Panama City is somewhere in between so far as driving distance goes, but I have always found flights into there much more expensive. South Walton is wonderful in the winter, no crowds and usually good weather even though too cold to swim. We love the foggy days, when everything looks white and all is sooooo still. Come on down...we'll see you there!

Thanks Donna!

Depends on where you're flying from.

PC - if making an ATL connection.

FW- if coming in from DFW.

I've found that driving to either airport takes the same amount of time from Seagrove. My mom flys non-rev on Delta from ATL, and we've made many trips to both airports. Actually I prefer picking her up at PC.

Yes, depends upon where you're flying from and the time. Unless you arrive in Ft. Walton in the evening, there is a lot of congestion to navigate and if it's raining heavily, this route is a real drag. I actually find Pensacola Airport the easiest of the three, in spite of the somewhat longer drive, but it also has that ridiculous $12 local tax every time you pass through the doors (Rippp!). We try to avoid Atlanta for connections and Houston is our preference over Dallas/Ft. Worth for same. One exception---if you're flying from the West Coast the only way to get a widebody aircraft is to fly into Atlanta. The comfort factor is considerably better on the widebodies and the smaller aircraft are not worth upgrades either in $$$ or FF miles. The new airport will be terrific if it eliminates the need for connecting flights, but I'm not holding my breath for that.

NO! Not Pensacola! Driving to pick Mom up at Pensacola makes me want to claw my eyeballs out. We've done it. Hell, it'd be easier to drive to her house in Newnan, GA, than drive to Pensacola and wait on a flight that's always late.

Oh, my! I would never drive to Pensacola to pick up a guest and then drive back to the beach house. Far too long. We always tell our guests that they must rent a car if they opt to fly into Pensacola. My comments were strictly related to our flying in for visits, a one-way trip each day arriving and departing. I have actually had far better luck with "on time" flights in and out of Pensacola (PNS) than with Ft. Walton (VPS). If you miss the last connecting flight to VPS, which is rather early in the evening, it requires waiting until the next day. And once when I had a connecting flight into VPS from ATL, Delta actually "lost the plane at the gate." I'm not kidding---those were the agent's very words to puzzled passengers. We were herded to three different gates before they admitted that they had lost the plane. I watched a male business traveler throw a fit and fall into it, thought he was going to attack that agent. (Actually, there were a total of five of them, all rolling their eyes and chatting about some reality tv show they were missing!) We finally ended up pulling into VPS at 1:30 a.m. and all the rental car agencies were closed. The airline rep called and a person came down, but it took everyone over an hour to get their cars. The new terminal was under construction and it was pouring rain (winter), so we had to walk a long distance from the plane along the flooded tarmac to the terminal, then walk another long distance in the rain to the temporary car rental area (also flooded). Traveling alone that time, I finally arrived at Grayton at 3:30 a.m. in a pouring rain, soaking wet and freezing, came down with the worst cold of my life and couldn't allow anyone to come to the house for several days until I was rid of the Ebola strain (or whatever).

Anyone who is unconvinced that poor access stymies real estate values at South Walton is obviously a person who has not had occasion to travel much distance in order to get there. I have been doing this on a regular basis for over 30 years, when I left the area for CA. We can literally fly to London or Paris in the same amount of total travel time and for no more than the same price as we pay to get to South Walton. Mind you, we keep doing it. And I'm not sure that the new airport is an altogether good thing for the area except for real estate values. There is the whole quality of life issue, too.

Can you spell...BANKRUPTCY? Lost a plane? Never heard that one before!!!!

Flying Southwest Airlines!

A mother and her very young son were flying Southwest Airlines from Kansas City to Chicago. The little boy (who had been looking out the
window) turned to his mother and asked, "If big dogs have baby dogs
and big cats have baby cats, why don't big planes have baby planes?"
The mother (who couldn't think of an answer) told her son to ask the
stewardess. So the boy went down the aisle and asked the stewardess.

The busy stewardess smiled, and said, "Did your mother tell you to
ask me?" The boy said, "yes she did." "Well, then, you go and tell
your mother that there are no baby planes because Southwest always
pulls out on time. Have your mother explain that to you."

...sorry a tangent I know, but it is about an airline :rolling:

I can echo the exact same sentiments as Donna for us flying from Chicago. Lost planes, ALWAYS lost luggage, trudging across tarmacs, rental car agencies closed, etc. Waiting for Delta to deliver luggage the next day. But we still do it too. I will have to say tho, that we do not mind at all flying in and out of P'cola. P'cola itself has sooooooo much more to offer than the towns of FWB and PC. We shop in P'cola, eat out at grat restaurants. I LOVE Pensacola!! And find their airport fine.
For that matter, has anybody ever gone in to the town of FWB? There's hardly anything there or anything open for business!!
