The story behind the story of the Arizona Immigration Law

This reporting is one of the reasons I listen to National Public Radio and watch PBS. I would think that any taxpayer would find this sort of lawmaking offensive; IMO too many people do not realize just what goes on...because they are not as involved as they need to be; and because too many are too focused on the "offense of the day." In the meantime, laws are being written by special interests groups who have co-opted legislators from both sides of the aisle...

Prison Economics Help Drive Ariz. Immigration Law : NPR
What he was selling was a prison for women and children who were illegal immigrants.

"They talk [about] how positive this was going to be for the community," Nichols said, "the amount of money that we would realize from each prisoner on a daily rate."

But Nichols wasn't buying. He asked them how would they possibly keep a prison full for years ? decades even ? with illegal immigrants?

"They talked like they didn't have any doubt they could fill it," Nichols said.

That's because prison companies like this one had a plan ? a new business model to lock up illegal immigrants. And the plan became Arizona's immigration law.

I heard some of the report this AM and was not surprised to hear about the largest private prison corporation paying lawmakers to write the law for its benefit.

What I was surprised about was how long it's taken for someone to report the story.

I am surprised to see that (apparently) there is no Floridian involved with this ALEC group--given how the state has relied upon prison building as one of our priorities for economic development in the last few years...:idontno:

Special place in hell for someone whose business model is changing laws so they can lock up MORE children and families.

And all of those millions in profit come from your tax dollars.

like competence, accountability, integrity, intelligence...and she happens to be a very caring person as well.

]Well, Rick Scott thought the Arizona law was just the thing for Florida when he was in the primary:[/B]

Rick Scott not mentioning immigration in general election ? Florida Independent: News. Politics. Media

Now, of course, he knows that he can't get the Hispanic vote with that in his platform, so it's on the back burner.

I would have to believe that he has this all covered, being the pro-business guy that he is. :sarc:

He must have made some recent new investments in future Florida prisons (for immigrants)--what a creative corporate business man!
