GM Basic Chart | General Motors Company Common S Stock - Yahoo! Finance

Buying ANY individual stock is not a good move.

End of free advice.

For the record from February 2009 thru January 2011, the S&P is up over 65% cumulatively.

Buzz, you're not making any sense. Who said anything about buying an individual stock? Thanks for the unneccessary free advice.

Stocks on average are way up and GM is down. GM is still paying out big bonuses for mediocre performance. Unions have killed this iconic company.

Labor certainly is a major factor at play. But have u seen (for instance) the new Chevy line. For the first time in a long time the designs are hot! I believe if they continue to make cars that people want they will be ok.

Geo,

I agree the designs are hot. I remember for almost 10 years thinking what is wrong with the design team of Gm that they can't produce a decent looking vehicle compared to the Japanese. The Pontiac Aztec just left me completely dismayed.

I think Americans want to buy GM cars. They need to look hot and last at least 10 years. I think for awhile GM was purposely making cars that would only last a number of years (planned obsolescence) so owners would have to replace them. Honda & Toyota took the other path.

I would love for GM to be #1 again but giving anyone taxpayer money creates dependence. I hope you can prove me wrong 1,2 or 3 years from now. I just envision the disaster that is Amtrak.

Actually you did:

"GM stock is lower than the IPO now. Not shaping up to be a good move."

You also wrote "Stocks on average are way up and GM is down"

Thanks for noticing that 65% rally since February of 2009.

It doesn't matter how "hot" they look. I'm more than willing to see how their maintenance record shakes out. We are a Ford family, not neccesarily for how hot they look but how much time they spend in the shop. The hubs is still driving a '98 Expediton, 209k+, shop time, body work after a hit and run accident. I drive a Ford, as do our daughter, son-in-law, and son. Newer models but on track with the Expedition.

I'll withhold any opinion on Government Owned Motors until their track record has been established.

The aesthetics of the design absolutely do matter. I'm not saying make a good looking car that will break down easily. But the American love affair with the automobile isn't about getting 200k miles out of a car.

And there my friend is the issue. Aesthetics over quality...lets just agree to disagree and I'll buy you a drink at the Tarpon Club one evening, since I'm saving on auto repairs. In the grand scheme of things, it's really not worth "discussing". Cheers! ;-)

Yes, read the thread title. It's not shaping up to be a good move to bail out GM. You're not on your game today. Nothing to do with buying GM stock.

The discussion is whether bailing out GM with taxpayer dollars was a good move. I can bold, underline and enlarge fonts if it helps you understand but that would just make me look like a jerk.

Nah, it's quite worth discussing. It is imperative that American car companies make nice looking vehicles (which are also reasonably reliable).

I'm not debating with you what your own priorities are. I take your word for it that you value longevity/dependibility in an automobile and could care less about looks.

I'm not saying how it *should* be. I'm just telling you how it actually *is*.

Superficial or not, Americans in large part buy cars they are attracted to. Marketing messages have conditioned us to do this.

Don't shoot the messenger. :idontno:

I guess since I belabored the point you aren't going to buy me that beer at Bud's.
