In an email dated Oct. 20 2008, Jack Abbit attempted to garner our support for his campaign by making a few statements and utilizing some fancy footwork. Much of what I read was pure spin. I will attempt to point out a few facts here which seem to suggest that maybe we should not believe all that Jack tells us.
In the first paragraph, Jack suggests that he is a candidate for re-election. This is untrue. This is an attempt to make us believe that he earned our respect and trust because we voted him into office once before. We did not. Jack was appointed to his position by his friends on the Fire Commission. Jack has never been elected and therefore cannot be ?re-elected?.
In the second paragraph he states: ?We have not taken one dollar of special interest money!? Please. Every dollar given to candidate campaigns is special interest. The individuals and groups giving the money don?t call each citizen and ask if that candidate will serve everyone?s needs equally. The money is given to the campaign by the individual or group because they believe the candidate will best serve their interests. Period. In any case, I believe the point that Jack is trying to make is mentioned again in paragraph five. More on that in a moment.
In paragraph four, Jack clearly points out that in his first two years as commissioner, he helped reduce the ad velorem tax rate from .83 to .70. But he fails to mention that he also helped to increase the rate for the 2008-2009 fiscal year to .76. I am not saying that this was a bad board decision, just that Jack conveniently failed to tell the WHOLE truth.
In paragraph five, Jack tries to give us a little ?insight into what we are facing in our race for ?re-election??. He does this by negatively framing the Firefighter?s support of his opponent. He goes on to imply that the Firefighters are trying to gain ?control? of the majority of the seven seats of the Commission and even throws in a little dramatic effect by asking us ?How can this be?? What he is conveniently leaving out (again) is that Jack himself vigorously sought the endorsement of the Firefighters Union for his candidacy. He did not get that support for reasons mentioned later in this letter. Jack makes it sound as if the Firefighters are trying to ?stack the board?. Jack has actually made this statement to many people in South Walton. He tells us this, in an apparent effort to make us believe that his opponent is not worthy of the seat, because the only reason the Firefighters are backing him is to try to overthrow the seated board. Again, what Jack conveniently omits is that this year the Firefighters endorsed Maurice Gilbert for SWFD Seat 1 (Chairman of the baord and long time incumbent) even though a Union Firefighter employed with Destin Fire Department was running against him. This does not sound like ?stacking the board? to me. Jack?s accusation however, sounds like an underhanded attempt to sully the name of the other gentleman running for Seat 3.
Jack also mentions in paragraph five that one of the seated Commissioners is a firefighter from Destin whose wife is employed at SWFD. He asks ?Does something seam wrong with this picture?? This is where it is helpful to know a little history. Jack attempted to have Brian Christensen (who was ELECTED by the voters and has done a fine job as Commissioner since Oct. 2006) removed by, single handedly and without Board action or authority, attempting to apply to the Florida Legislature to Change the SWFD Charter. He instructed then SWFD Legal Council Allen Ramey (God, rest his soul) to construct ?Nepotism? language for inclusion in the SWFD Charter preventing Board Members from being related (by marriage or any other means) to anyone employed by SWFD. Anyone else picking up on this? Here we have an appointed commissioner underhandedly, without ever having discussed the issue in an open SWFD Board meeting (sunshine law), trying to have an ELECTED member of the board removed by submitting unapproved language to the legislature for inclusion in the SWFD Charter. WOW. These are not just accusations. I have a copy of the public notice. It reads as follows:
------------------------------------------------
To Whom It May Concern: Notice is herby given of intent to apply to the 2007 legislature for passage of an act relating to the South Walton Fire District, amending chapter 2000-491 Laws of Florida, relating to the election of two Fire Commissioners from each of three specified geographical areas within the boundary of the South Walton Fire District and the election of one Fire Commissioner from the district as a whole, and further amending the act prohibiting nepotism between Fire Commissioners and employees of the South Walton Fire District, providing an effective date.
----------------------------------------------
I also have a copy of the language that was to be submitted to the Legislature. (to much to post here)
I also have a copy of a letter from our friend Julia Cobb Costas (Senior Attorney for the State of Florida Commission On Ethics). Which clearly states that it is perfectly legal and ethical for elected officials to be related to people employed by entities under their jurisdiction. This letter became public record in 2006 and Jack either knew or should have known of it?s impact on his underhanded plans.
In paragraph six, Jack states ?WE must keep a fair, balanced and unbiased Board of Commissioners of the South Walton Fire District.? Keep? Based on what I have witnessed, there seems to be something unfair, unbalanced and certainly biased about the board now. That is Jack Abbit. It is easy to see that Jack will do what ever it takes to make his own ends meet. He utters half-truths and conveniently omits important things to suit his purpose.
Every thing I have written here is verifiable. A little research into the archives and a couple of succinctly written Public Records Requests will fetch everything you need to prove all of this. Just do it before you go to the polls on Nov. 4th.
