I live about 5 hours from St. Louis and my husband works for Century Tel phone company, he was called out on emergency tonight to go up near St. Louis to help restore phone service. He said it is a real mess, electrical lines down everywhere and people without power and phones. We had record breaking heat today, 104 degrees in our little town, and that was the actual temp!! With the humidity factored in, the heat index was 115!!!

 Bless your hearts!!!

Hope things get better very soon for ya'll. I saw that there were numerous injuries due to high winds at the new Busch Stadium on Wednesday night - as if the heat in and of itself weren't already bad enough. Those St. Louis summers can be brutal!

I worried about ya'll when I saw this in the news. So sorry for ktchris. I'm not really close by but would still do anything to help. Last time this happened to me I lost so much food. If she needs anything please pm me.

 You guys are all sooo sweet. Thanks so much.

This morning I HAVE POWER!!! :clap_1: :clap_1: :clap_1:

Never realized how spoiled I am. Last night, after work, I went home to pack some stuff for the kids to spend the night at a friends house. Every time I walked into a room, I reached over and flip the d*** switch. It's amazing how and what we take for granted. At least we are having a break in the weather today, only supposed to get into the mid 80's.

Elec. Co. says there are still 400,000 without. My sister is still out, she had to take her dog to the HS this morning. They have set up emergency shelters for pets without power. A large donation is going there way!

And yes, seagrovelover, I do go where the gin bucket is, Chris and I shared one last night

Thanks again guys for your well wishes!

Yes she is staying with our friends tonight and then spending the night downtown tomorrow.......just saw on the nine o'clock news that St Louis city has just been deemed a " national disaster" it really is a huge mess. and now they are saying the electric may not come on in some areas for as long as five days, and damn its hot
It's amazing--the National Guard's been mobilized here!
Hey, kts, there you are! So glad to hear the news. When I said bedtime prayers with the kids last night, I said thanks for us not losing our power--you realize what a big deal it is when it affects so many people.

Yeah, I should have known when I booked a room for tonight, that I would have power :)

But hey, we are going to be down here for the concert under the arch anyway...so I think we'll keep the room.

So PeaPod, just in case you decided to come down tonight, I will wear my SoWal sticker somewhere -- keep your eyes open!

So, you're still going to the concert, you trooper! Mr. Pod is a lifelong Cheap Trick fan, but we won't be able to go tomorrow night because Littlest Pea's birthday party is tomorrow. Let us know how Todd and Toad are!

Glad to hear you have power KT! My son and daughter-in-law live in South St. Louis County area and they still are without power. My 86 year old mother in Affton is still out as well, and until this a.m. shes refused to leave her home. It's so frustrating! She's been staying in her finished basement. We tried to get her to leave yesterday but she was adament that she was staying home. She finally agreed to go stay with my sister this morning. My son, daughter-in-law and their two dogs have been staying with us. My bunny isn't too thrilled about the dogs, but we're managing to keep them apart. ;-)

We were discussing last night how this situation is so minor compared with what happened to the poor folks in New Orleans and Mississippi following Katrina and Rita last year. They had absolutely NO place to cool off, no fresh drinking water, and the poor animals had to stay back and suffer. At least in our situation in St. Louis, there are homes with power, and lots of folks have opened their homes to those without.

Ironically my son and his wife are leaving for Louisiana on Sunday for one week with other members of their church group to help rebuild homes for hurricane victims. This situation with having lost power in their own home has made them even more aware of how helpless these people truly were (and many still are).

The Missouri National Guard has been called to assist and they are going door-to-door checking on people. Ameren UE is saying that their goal is to have most homes with power by tomorrow evening, but given the magnitude of this outage they say many could be without for several more days. My daughter-in-law said she saw a sign yesterday afternoon in front of someone's home offering their home as a place to cool off. Luckily there are many shelters and churches who are now open, and they're remaining pretty full.

Hopefully things will be back to normal soon. It is so very hot and humid.

Ohmygosh  As I'm typing, I'm looking out my office window and the clouds are looking quite ominous at the moment! I'm seeing a squall line and the winds are increasing by the minute. Trees are beginning to bend again! This would be awful if another monster blows through!

It's getting darker and windier by the minute. Gotta run to check on things. More info later!

Be careful out there! ktchris...so glad to see you back on SoWal today!
