Time to Get Out of Afghanistan?

New posts
Why don't we start with Iraq? I don't understand why Obama still has over 100K troops there. I would have thought the draw down would have been much quicker.

After nine years (the longest war in our history), the US has lost 1200 lives and spent almost $300 billion on the war in Afghanistan, and yet the Taliban is stronger than at any time since 2001.

Is it time to get out of Afghanistan?
"Rethinking Afghanistan" was Newsweek's cover this week. The cover story was entitled, "We're not winning. It's not worth it."

"By the time Obama became president in 2009, the situation in Afghanistan was fast deteriorating. Trends were judged to be so bad that the president ordered 17,000 more American troops to Afghanistan even before the first review he'd ordered was finished. Since then Obama has had several opportunities to reassess U.S. goals and interests in Afghanistan, and in each instance he has chosen to escalate. Today the counterinsurgency strategy that demanded all those troops is clearly not working. [The] approach is hugely expensive ... and is highly unlikely to succeed."

I could have sworn our President targeted August 2010 for the inception of an exodus from Iraq. Then, Afghanistan. Wonder what happened?

A majority of Americans have no interest in Afghanistan or supporting a war there. The honorable service men and families still have a stake in it though--terrible disconnect in our country for being in a war--reminds me of Vietnam.

......And now with knowledge that Pakistan (our ally?) is helping the Taliban there....let's just get the mofo out!

According to wikipedia, the end of combat operations is by the end of August, with a full withdrawl of military troops by the end of 2011.

A.P. reported a few days ago - we're on track with the schedule. So this is good news. Odd that you don't hear much about this in the media.

The Associated Press: War general says US exit from Iraq on track

With the release of classified information which could put our military in danger by people posing as responsible journalists, a totally corrupt government and "rules of engagement" that hamstring our troops, I see no defendable reason for us to remain in Afganistan. It is turning out to be worse than VietNam and that is saying a lot!

We should've gotten totally out when we (for all intents and purposes) punted on Afghanistan to make our ridiculous invasion of Iraq.
