Too many bicycles

There are entirely too many people riding bicycles on 30a, especially in and around Seacrest. More than once I've seen older people almost get run over by kids on bikes and the children themselves are at risk. Where are the parent's of these kids, getting drunk at the local pub?

Somehow, you need to accept that this area relies on tourism and one of the main activities of those tourist is cycling. I'm all for it and I do not bike! You are right that some of those using bikes on the Timpoochee Trail could use a lesson in courtesy. As far as too many bikes, I am not in that camp.

It isn't the number of bikes, it is the behavior of the bikes. Few riders seem to have any clue about bike safety or courtesy and I cringe watching all the kids riding without helmets.

Was on 30A Friday and there were a lot of bikes.
1. They do not watch where they are going.
2. They do not abide by street stop signs and cut right in front of you.
3. They ride like Stevie Wonder: Looking all over.
4. It's going to take a death (hope not) to make a difference.
5. We are just too small a town to take care of all these tourists.
6. They think they own the road.
7. All the "faux" racers who have to ride on the skinny roads.

Just sayin'

:banging:

I do love that people enjoy getting around on bikes. But, yes, there are certain times such as the last month, that some places are covered in bikers and other places piled up in piles of bikes. Last week I could hardly walk down the sidewalk in Seaside for all the bikes in literal piles, parked everywhere. But its kind of a happy chaos.

I think there are more bike rental businesses now than anything else in town... Plus lots of rental homes now come equipped with bikes.

Cars just need to take it easy driving through the handful of areas congested with walkers and bikers. Its what we have had to learn to do over the years.

We've survived another spring break. Our businesses are happy and our tourists are back home tired and happy. And locals can sigh with relief for a bit.

We just bike during weeks when the bike path is pretty clear and find plenty of other things to do when the paths are full of bikers. We find different activities for different seasons, now that we've learned the rhythm of the area. When we get bikes, we tend to bike early before everyone else is out and then stay off the path once it gets busy. That makes for a much more relaxing vacation (and leaves time for naps, reading on the porch, spending time time at the beach, exploring the various communities by foot, people watch, and more).

Paula, you sound way too sensible. I thought we were getting only the fringe ranters on this site. My bad.
