anyone else been following this coverage ? i was so excited for the miners and their families when at midnight they said they found 12 out of 13 alive, then could not believe my ears when at 3 am they said all were dead but one. talk about irresponsible reporting. my heart goes out to the families, i can't imagine the pain of being told a loved one was found alive, then 3 hrs later being told, oops, our bad, everyone's dead but one. i think the miner found alive is surely meant to go on to do something important with his life - he has a purpose apparently, huh ?

He certainly is one blessed fellow. Sadness overwhelms me when I listen to the reports. What a dangerous job!

It sounds like one big communication mess-up. In a situation like that, how could it not be totally chaotic in terms of information? Those poor people- it is heartbreaking to watch the news this morning. I'm sure they were clinging to every little hope and scrap of info.

When it comes to the 12-survivors-then-1 story, seems to me the media might have jumped the gun on this one, in their zeal to get the scoop out to the public.
It is a dangerous job. Anyone familiar with the sad song, Dark As A Dungeon?
I wish our country could find safer ways to to obtain energy.

I agree Cil- it seems like nothing but sadness, sickness, poverty, and tragedy comes from mining. I used to think the only good job in mining was to be an owner, but just being in the area is dangerous- years ago, a friend's dad was driving in eastern KY (he was in the business) and his car was hit by a coal truck. He survived, but had a terrible brain injury and has been shuffling around for years. You hear about these truck accidents all the time- the roads are terrible, drivers are speeding with overloaded trucks, maintenance is slim and none, etc. It is the same sad story on top of the mountain as underneath it. :bang:

I wanted to throw up this morning when I heard.

The media apparently followed what the governor himself was saying. Bad communication all around. What a heartbreak. I hope the survivor does recover enough to have a meaningful life. I've seen the results of brain injury first hand also, and much/most of the time it is not pretty.

You're right.
I watched How Green Was My Valley not too long ago. It's resonating now, for sure.

I just love how the media is already concentrating on who is at fault for the wrong information instead of the fact that 12 people are dead.

I can't get this off of my mind so I have to ask, what were you doing up at 3:00am?

Hubby got home from work at 1AM and I told him the good news, then I noticed "breaking news" a little while later with the revised story. I didn't get the impression that the media was responsible for giving erroneous info to the families - heard something about rescue workers calling the family members on their cell phones, and that those family members were at the same church as the governor...one thing led to another and the bad info eventually found its way to the media. Regardless, I feel so much pain for these families - to have so much hope and think their loved ones are alive, only to discover the truth. It is just heartbreaking. We followed this story so closely - my hubby's family is from West Virginia and many of his relatives still work in the mines.
