Turning off the water when leaving home

New posts
There is a type of water hose for washing machines that is more resistant to breakage. When they come out to fix the refrigerator, we're having them replace those hoses as well as a preventative measure. I think we'll do that at our daughter's place in Atlanta too because the management company said that if the hose breaks on her washer, she's liable for damage to residences below her.

BR, absolutely change those washing machine hoses! They're pretty cheap and easy to install and worth a thousand times more than those flimsy standard hoses.

Merman read your post and was reminded of the time last fall that we arrived at our condo to find the toilet overflowing and water everywhere. It was actually the day of Steeling1's wedding and we had quite the time mopping up and cleaning up for the wedding. Talk about having too many things on our plate. Anyway, the culprit was an old connector on something, which we replaced with a stronger metal part (as opposed to its plastic predecessor  ).

I think you might be too late, but you still ought to check it out. Unfortunately, all of my links are saved on my old laptop which is being serviced and might be dead (and I never exported them to my new laptop). Just Google polybutylene pipe, and you'll find lots of links. The websites show photos of the pipes covered under the lawsuit, you call the phone number on the site, and someone comes out and verifies that your pipes are covered under the lawsuit. Then they make arrangements for a company to come out and replace all of your pipes.
Thanks i'll check it out..

Just make sure you turn off your water every time you leave your house. Even to go to the grocery store. We did that from the time we discovered the horror of polybutylene until we had it fixed.

BTW it took them about 6 weeks to replace the pipe and repair all of the holes in the sheet rock. It took months before we got rid of all of the dust from them sawing the sheet rock. This was in the summer of 2001 while our daughter was at the Georgia Governor's Honors Program, so at least she wasn't inconvenienced.
