Friends and family gathered Thursday night to remember the lives of two brothers, who were very involved in the Defuniak Springs community.
Search crews spent Sunday evening and most of Monday looking for the 21-year-old Lucas and 17-year-old Logan Alford.

When the two brothers did not return from their fishing trip by nightfall Sunday, family members reported them missing.

Authorities found their bodies in the bay, the next day.

At that time, search crews said it wasn't the ending they were hoping for and expressed their sadness.

Mark Hollinhead, with the FWC Search Crew, said, "At this time, our thoughts are with the family."

According to the boy's football coach, Lenny Jankowski, the autopsy report shows the boys were struck by lighting.

Jankowski also says Logan and Lucas were more than brothers, they were best friends.

Coach Jankowski said, "Logan and Lucas were both very popular in the community. Popular around here at Walton High School and big family guys. So it's something that's difficult for all of us."

Both of the brothers played football for Walton High School. In 2003, Lucas set the school record for most tackles in a season.Logan's goal was to break that record. He was about to enter his senior year at Walton High. However, the tragedy of their deaths will leave many plans unfinished and many questions unanswered.

"It's very easy to get caught up into trying to understand, but it's not anything we'll ever be able to understand. We just have to trust in our faith."

Funeral services for Lucas and Logan Alford are scheduled for Friday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Defuniak Springs, with burial to follow at Euchee Valley Cemetery.

That is sooo sad........The Bay can be treacherous! My heart and prayers go out to the family.

My heart-felt sympathy to the family of these two young men. PLEASE don't takethunder storms for granted- Florida is the number one state for deaths by lightning.

As a mom,I really can't even begin to think about loosing one son much less both.

According to the obit, they had a brother proceed them in heaven.........I can't imagine..............

Wow, I'm sorry to hear this. I've heard that Florida has more lightning strikes and subsequent deaths than any other state. I walked around a lake the other day knee deep while thunder sounded around me. After hearing this, it puts my actions in perspective. I was not being too responsible for my children.

I feel sorry for the wife as well that also has a seven week old son. She has a loving family behind her. But losing both of your sons in the same day is horrible.

My heart goes out to this family...

... and also makes me think of the family from DeFuniak who lost two daughters in that car accident at the 395 / 98 intersection a few years ago. :(
