Unemployment hits 9.8%

Unfortunate initial jobs report out today showing the recovery may be more sluggish than initially thought. The work force remained flat while the unemployment number went up, which is not good. This recovery is going to be long, slow, and painful. We're simply not going to get back to the level of consumption per individual that we had prior to 2008. Growth prospects look bleak.

Maybe this will put more pressure on congress to do something next year to help consumers clean up their balance sheets. I like the Bowles-Simpson payroll tax holiday idea for 2011. Money had a good article on the subject recently:

Slash the deficit! But give a payroll tax holiday - Dec. 1, 2010

Frustrating knowing it doesnt have to be this way. Our leadership apparently didnt take economics 101 in their ivy league class. Instead they took Saul Alinskys economics class

Our President is making things much worse. He is going to get steamrolled in '12. Worst President ever.

He's got 2 years to go, aren't you prejudging him?

I know, I know, if things turn around between now and the next election it's all thanks to the Republican congress.

I think if we had taken a different approach back in 2008, we'd be in better shape today. It's interesting that a number of the options democrats shunned two years ago are now back on the table as potential solutions.

Going forward I'm more optimistic than I've been, any recovery related legislation will be driven by the republicans in the House.

Of course we're prejudging him. If he were Bill Clinton we wouldnt, but Obama is no Clinton. One just needs to know who he has surrounded himself with his whole life and what he believes in to know he's not coming to the middle anytime soon.

And of course if things turn around itll be because of the Republicans. Just ask Clinton at the beginning of his second term. And yet he, the entire DNC and the media still make it sound like it was him. Those of us who remember history know better.

But, as an American Im still holding on to hope..

Actually the label most political analysts choose for Obama is centrist!

"Obama campaigned as a center left pragmatic reformer and that?s pretty much what he is. Not that he is carrying out every campaign promise, but anyone who was paying attention got what they voted for.

The truth is, Obama is out of place in today?s highly partisan political arena. His policies make very few, whether on the right or left, happy enough to be enthusiastic about his presidency, Fortunately, that doesn?t seem to upset him too much, and he has the tenacity and conviction to pursue the pragmatic center-left approach he campaigned on. But it would help a lot ? and certainly increase the likelihood of him settling on the best possible policies ? if he had more people willing to work with him, offering ideas, compromising and helping instead of yelling."

Your nutty memory is pretty short.....forgot about "w" didn't ya

Here, let me respond for you so you can cut/paste.

"W" wasn't the issue, it was the Democratic lead legislative branches that kept him from moving forward with his plans.....;-)

This is exactly my point, you both act as though congress moves with the speed of a ninja. It's only carryover if it's bad and it was a democrat in office or congress. Keep trying to rewrite history, your version will be akin to what elementary school children are taught about the pilgrims:

I don't think anyone is trying to rewrite history. Listen, unemployment - 9.8%. That's not a rewrite, that's fact. When the President and current congress took control two years ago, they stated their policies would keep unemployment below 8%. It hasn?t worked out as well as they anticipated. The stimulus is spent and done, and unemployment continues to rise. This is not a rewrite, it?s fact. I would hope politicians recognize this and recognize that if we can?t learn from our mistakes, we?re not going to make any progress.
