Upset in Florida Governor?s Race
Florida?s gubernatorial race underwent a major upset Tuesday as a write in Republican candidate for Governor garnered the most votes.
Most pre-election polls showed candidates Charlie Crist, and Jim Davis leading; but election results show that write in candidate H.R. Pufnstuf has won Florida?s Gubinatorial race.
Many Floridians remember that during the early 1970's, Pufnstuf was the mayor of the psychedelically strange community of Living Island.
Political analysts have noted that Pufnstuf simply connected well with the voters. ?Basically, Pufnstuf?s life story closely matches those of the typical conservative Republican voter. He was once heavily involved in the liberal counter-culture society of the 60?s and 70?s but has since grown older, and more conservative.?
During the 1970?s, when Pufnstuf was mayor, Living Island was famous for its large stoner counter-culture community. His speeches during this era are full of sly pot and drug references which most of us would consider unthinkable today. Then, during the 80?s, Pufnstuf underwent a conversion. He began attending local bible studies and became a born again Christian. Leaving politics behind, Pufnstuf started a Real Estate company and went on to develop several large retirement communities across south Florida.
Freeport resident Bob Nesmith summed up many voter?s opinions, ?What can I say, I just like the guy. And clearly he was the most pro-family, anti-gay candidate.?
Observers have noted the success of another Living Island alumni, Witchiepoo, who went on to serve in Florida?s State Government and who is currently running for U.S. Senate. Witchiepoo of course was her nickname, most Floridians know her by her legal name, Katherine Harris.
