Vacation home owners avoiding other taxes?

New posts
For what it is worth, most owners of vacation rentals use a management company to collect rent and sales tax and pay the sales tax to the state and county on the owners' behalf.

These are businesses set up to follow the rules so the homeowners do not have to, and I have never heard from any of them that owners need to separately file electricity sales taxes with the state. These rental managers will tell you all about linen sanitizing and emergency lights, so it is not as if they don't know what they are doing.

I have to think that a piece of the puzzle is missing here.

That is why I brought it up. This all started from talking to a FLDOR employee and him collecting back sales tax on an improperly coded motel.

Thanks, wrobert, I now have a new topic to present at the next FTDTA Region One quarterly meeting. We've been needing something new to talk about.

Chelco collects sales tax on my residential bill every month, there were almost $20 in taxes last month:

12/30/08 Gross Receipts Tax4.82 12/30/08 State Sales Tax15.44

Are you saying that since this is my primary residence I should not have to pay it?

Sorry for the delay in response but I had to get my Chelco bill to see what you were talking about. And guess what. No sales tax on my bill. Just the Gross Receipts Tax. So what does your says as the type up by the account number? I am curious as to why they are charging you sales tax and not me. Maybe they recognize your mini-motel for what it is.

Since what you do ties into sales tax, and since a good portion of that sales tax goes back to the county, maybe you guys can start checking into that for the rest of the citizens so that everyone is paying their fair share and all.
