Walton County has lowest unemployment rate in Florida

"If you have been out of work for a year and want gainful employment but have given up hope you are suddenly not there?" Perhaps reclassify an example this as "Unemployable" and correctly drop them from the willing and able to be employed. If one has sincerely looked for a job for a year without result, I would need to be convinced that it is the job market that is at fault.

Try living in a place where it's common to get 100 applications for a white collar entry-level job, and the service industry won't touch you because you're over-educated.

It took me a year and a half to get my foot in the door here with a cruddy part-time clerical position that was a horrible fit between me and my employer, and another eight months before I found something else I didn't totally hate.

No one has mentioned the undocumented worker that have left town or the many people that work under the table or radar. Statistics are easy to pad. There is a reason why Channel 7 & 13 never cover anything in Walton County! One other thing it is usually a last result to go to the unemployment line. Let them take this poll in say, about November.

This is true. Ask anyone who works in a hiring capacity around here. The number of overqualified applicants is staggering.

I don;t understand what news coverage has to do with anything...pls explain your thinking.

Pretty simple actually. There is hardly any thing involving Walton County on the News. County Commissioner meetings, Wrecks the usual stuff that is on the news. Generally speaking, If you don't hear about it from someone or in the Sun a Week later or here on SoWal you never hear about it.

Okay, but what does that have to do with unemployment or employment?
It mostly has to do with the fact that we do not have a tv station or a daily paper in this county....it's been a long day, I must be missing your point.

I found that article to be a joke. There have been so many closings in south walton county of small shops and restaurants. It took my 18 year old son almost 8 months to find a job and he even applied to some places 2 and 3 times.
My oldest son finally moved to Panama City Beach for work so I would love to know who padded those figures. I have lived here for almost 30 years and this has been the least amount of jobs in this area since my oldest was a baby and I know several guys in the construction trade that had to move due to lack of jobs in the area so I am not buying that article.

While I understand your frustration I do have to point out that the government only knows someone is unemployed if they report it. Was your 18 year-old receiving unemployment? If not then the government wouldn't be counting them.

I'd best a lot/most service industry employees in the area don't work enough hours to be considered to be full time, so they're not elgible for unemployment bennies to begin with.
