Watching now...This is sick...

I saw the show yesterday and still have it on TIVO. I need some advice please - should I watch it again with my 9 year old son? I have talked to him about alot of dangers but I have not been as specific as they were on the show.

He does not have a tv or computer in his room, but he does have access to both in our house. Thoughts?

TIA

Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing for a 9 yo. Maybe Tatertot can shed a little light on that.
I talked with my 15yo last night. I haven't shown it to him yet, but as soon as I said "webcab" he immediately said, "Oh those are bad. Those are nothing but trouble. People from everywhere can see you......" So I guess he knew more than I realized, which made me feel a little better.

I think I'd be a little concerned for a 9yo to watch it - it was pretty raw. But boy, he's right on the cusp tho.

WIll keeps begging for internet access in his room - NO!!! He has a nice computer, his games are on it, he, does school work, and if he needs to print anything, he loads it on his thumb drive and brings it to our computer. If he needs internet, he has to wait for me to get off SoWal (sometimes the poor kid waits all night:floor: ). I can't trust him to be on this board by himself since he gets on and talks about me.

TV is in the kids' play area, and games are with that. No cable TV/internet in bedrooms at this house! Well, we have cable in our room...
Have those of you with kids checked into the whole "myspace.com" thing?

You know, I think just talking to him about the dangers of the internet (and the webcam) would probably be enough. My friend's daughter had a webcam in her room and someone did ask her to take off her blouse. Her daughter said "no way." How does my friend know this, because she has spyware on her daughter's computer, and no, her daughter does not know this. She can read everything coming in and going out on that computer. Now that brings up a whole new subject, right? Spying.

As far as kids staying in their rooms, isn't that just a teenager thing? I grew up in a family of 3 girls. My mother said I closed the door at 14 and didn't come out until 18. I had no TV, no phone and certainly no computer (the 70s) in my room, only a radio and "record player." How did we survive? :idontno: For parents of teenage boys, check the History. I was in for a shock. I was especially shocked that you could see so much without having to pay for some sort of subscription. Makes finding a Playboy magazine in your son's room look like child's play.

Wow , this is just unbeliveable. We will never have a webcam in this house thats for sure! Thanks for the heads-up, I will be watching....this is the kind of stuff that you just cant say "I don't want to watch it" it is real and it is life, knowledge is power ! it's shows like this one that gives us parents a kick in the butt to open our eyes and maybe be able to protect our kids a little better.....just my two cents :D

AND no, what is MySpace.com? It's hard to stay abreast of things we know nothing about. :idontno:

My VERY limited knowledge of myspace.com is that it is a site where anyone (but mostly teens) log on and communicate with others online. This is where the webcams come into play. Rather than just listing random facts about yourself and showing a picture, you can communicate via video. Since kids are often in a situation where they will do almost anything for attention, they feel free to "act out" on camera. Not everyone uses a webcam, some of them post "party pictures."

I just now went to the website to see for myself. I was shocked and angry that I saw so many provocative looks from the girls. I may be old, but I am not stupid. These kids were looking for attention in the worst way. Unfortunetly, you don't know who is going to give them that attention.

It is so sad.

Well, I agree checking the history is a good idea, but my son's friends are over every weekend. They all take turns on the computer, im-ing, playing games, and probably "looking at stuff." That's to be expected, imo. But some kids, my son included, have set up their own passwords so we can't even get in to view his history. And again, that's not being sneaky of them. It's no different than when we had locked diaries. My mom was so sure I was doing something evil & promiscuous, and I wasn't.
