Beach Crab
We are scheduled to vacation in Destin in two weeks. We have heard from friends that people using this web site have been saying that the water smells and that the rental agencies are telling their guests not to go into the water. Can anyone comment on these rumors?

Thanks, Jim S Atlanta

So far every thing is OK. I think that everyone will let you know if the oil is here and a problem for the beach. We do not want you to come done and be unhappy. Of course you can ride bikes, swim in the pool, go to Seaside to the free concerts and just be around all the beauty this area provides.

Thats the media thats done this. I spent most of the day and into the night on grayton and it was clear as a bell and zero oil. the media is fear mongering

a sage observation from earlier today, from Murray:

Signs of oil here are much like the weather. It may be raining now, then clear skies in 30 minutes, and while there may be sunshine in Grayton, it may be raining in Blue Mtn Beach.

Last night, I could smell oil in South Walton. If you really want to know what it smells like, open the oil fill cap on your car engine and get a whiff. The oil smells like oil. As most people said, it isn't overwhelming, doesn't take your breath, and moves on as quickly as the wind changes direction. This morning, not a sign of oil odor in the air. Clear blue skies with some fluffy clouds. The wind is blowing out of the south, rather than the south west, and with the oil still west of us, that means no odor of oil for us now. Slight changes in weather make all the difference.

There is old saying, "Make hay while the sun is shining." You can carry that over to relate to the beach lifestyle. When the weather is nice, enjoy it. Wait until the weather is crappy to start complaining.
