Walton County Sheriff’s Office is hosting their annual Backpack Drive for the third year in a row to benefit children in need in our community as they prepare to go back to school this fall.

Through July 28, 2017, WCSO will be collecting backpacks and other school supplies needed for Walton County students to attend classes. Donations can be dropped off at the Sheriff’s Office in DeFuniak Springs or the South Walton Substation in Santa Rosa Beach.

Not only are we challenging the public to donate, we are participating in an inner agency competition to see which bureau can donate the most items. On July 29, WCSO will be hosting a community event at Pat Covell Park where backpacks will be donated to those in need.

“There’s nothing more important than the children in our community,” said Sheriff Michael Adkinson. “This backpack drive gives these kids the boost of confidence they need to tackle the new school year.”

All donations may be dropped off during normal business hours at the north and south end locations.

WCSO helps gear kids up with backpack drive

With school starting back up in just a handful of weeks, the Walton County Sheriff's Office is already stocking up on school supplies for kids in need.

"We started it a few years ago and it was a way for us to send kids back to school with some confidence. There is nothing more encouraging than having a brand new backpack and some new supplies and things like that," said Corey Dobridnia with the Walton County Sheriff's Office.

Each year, WCSO holds a backpack drive, collecting school items such as pens, pencils, highlighters and glue sticks, as well as of course, backpacks and lunch boxes.

"We Went to a local boutique here and bought some. We really wanna try to keep it local and they're really great. So for me, if I have the means to help somebody, I wanna do that and like I said. this is not about the sheriff's office. This is not about glorifying ourselves. It's about helping our community and sending kids back to school with confidence," said Dobridnia.

If you would like to donate, you can stop by the north or south Walton County Sheriff's stations, as well as any Walton County Fire Rescue Station, the county jail and animal control.

"We're gonna put out boxes at each location, so you can throw donations in the boxes in the lobbies. Or you can drop off a check or money or whatever you can do. Anything helps. A dollar helps. So whatever anybody can do," stated Dobridnia.

Redd's Fueling Station restuarant owner, Redd Vizard, recently heard about the Walton County Sheriff Mike Adtkinson appeal for backpacks to benefit children in need for the coming school year.

Redd - known as the Singing Bartender, took up up the cause by offering to be a drop off location. Redd posted on facebook, for every bookbag and or bag of supplies brought, Redd will sing any song on the request list for you! Well since she started the campaign, her bar space has been getting less and less due to the fantasitc response from the community. Redd kicked off this week long event Thursday night with a great group of ladies from the Santa Rosa Golf and Beach Club and have already collected close to 100 backpacks and a great pile of supplies.

"I cannot believe the response, said Redd, within a couple of days the backpacks came pouring in ! I know this community will continue to bring in the supplies, and I hope my voice goes hoarse from singing the requests. Thanks to everyone for donating, and spreading the word."

Redd is not stopping though, the appeal will keep going through July 27th. If you wish to donate, the supplies needed include No. 2 pencils, glue sticks, 8 count washable markers, 12 count crayons, highlighters, notebook paper, composition books, folders with brads and pockets, 1 and 2 inch binders, subject notebooks and BACKPACKS.

“There’s nothing more important than the children in our community,” said Sheriff Michael Adkinson, during his initial appeal. “This backpack drive gives these kids the boost of confidence they need to tackle the new school year.”

Redd's is open Tuesday through Saturday 5-11 and has a great menu and live music every night. Redd performs her singing bartender shows on Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays, 6:30 to 10.

Donations can also be dropped off at the Sheriff’s Office in DeFuniak Springs or the South Walton Substation in Santa Rosa Beach.
Redd's Fueling Station is located behind Sallys By The Sea Store at 2320 Hwy 30A, Santa Rosa Beach Fl 32459.
